Tommy Paul v Radu Albot Head to Head

There has been only one previous meeting between Paul and Albot and it came in the 2016 Acapulco Open qualifiers. The then-18-year-old Paul had won that in a tough three-setter.

Paul’s Finding it Tough at the Highest Level

45-16. That was Paul’s win-loss record in 2019, making it one of the best seasons of his career.

That also prompted him to try and take that step up to play more of the tournaments at the ATP level, and when, as a qualifier Paul made it to the semifinal of the Adelaide International, it looked like things were looking good for the American.

A third round appearance at the Australian Open, his best performance at Grand Slam tennis, made it even better for Paul but since then, things have turned around for the worse. Other than the quarterfinal at Acapulco, he hasn’t won back to back main draw matches in a tournament.

At Antwerp last week, he had started off with odds of 1/2 in his first round match against Feliciano Lopez and yet went down in straight sets to him, making it 3-4 on win-loss before the start of this tournament.

A 7-6, 6-3 victory over Stefano Travaglia in the opener here should help but can he make it back to back victories, his first since the Acapulco Open earlier this year.

Chalk & Cheese Showing from Albot Last Two Seasons

A Delray Beach Open title win last season for Albot promised a lot but since then, his performances have gone downhill. This year, in fact, when Albot finished his French Open campaign, his win-loss record read 2-12 – a win at the Hamburg Open qualifiers and then one at the French Open.

In more recent times, the signs of a revival have looked up. At the Cologne Open, the tournament which followed his second round appearance at the French Open, Albot overcame Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the first round and then took out Oscar Otte in the second to set up his first quarterfinal of the season against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

And while Auger-Aliassime did not have too much trouble getting the better of Albot, the latter would have taken some positive out of it.

Albot did lose his opener at the following week’s Cologne Open – to Otte this time – and the signs of struggle were back to the fore in the first round here when the 172nd-ranked Dmitry Popko stretched him to a third set. He could find it difficult here as a result.

Paul v Albot Prediction and Tip

Paul is unsurprisingly the favourite here at 4/9 and we think he should win this in straight sets too.

Tip: Games Handicap Paul -2.5: 8/11 (bet365)
