Daniil Medvedev v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

Two previous matches between these two have resulted in a 1-1 head to head scoreline. The first match came at the Shanghai Masters last season which Medvedev won in straight sets before Pospisil had his revenge in Rotterdam earlier this year with a 6-4, 6-3 win.

Medvedev Jogs Past Jung

Following his semifinal appearance at the US Open, Medvedev’s form has fallen apart and he has a lot to prove. Especially given how quickly fellow Russian Andrey Rublev’s fortunes have risen, almost mirroring his own form from the previous year.

Medvedev’s first round win over lucky loser Jason Jung was on expected lines but more so, the dropping of a mere four games was a step in the right direction from the Russian. Results haven’t been that easy for Medvedev since that US Open semifinal, and even before that, he hasn’t found the going very straightforward.

At the St. Petersburg Open, for instance, the tournament he played in just before this, Medvedev featured in two below-par showings. He was taken to three sets in his opening win by Richard Gasquet and then went down to Reilly Opelka in the second round after being a set down.

And that had followed opening round exits at both, the Hamburg Open and the French Open.

With a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jung, Medvedev might have got some of his rhythm back and now gets another chance to exhibit his clinical side against a player ranked 81st in the world.

Pospisil Not Yet Past His Prime?

Just when one thought he might have been done with his singles career, Pospisil surprised a few with his run at the US Open earlier this year. The Canadian reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows, having gotten to that stage at a Grand Slam only once before that.

That run consisted of wins over Philipp Kohlschreiber, Milos Raonic and Roberta Bautista-Agut, three tricky opponents in their own right. Coming for someone who hadn’t played a single match – at any level including exhibition tennis – since February, it was a solid achievement.

While he fell to back to back opening round losses after that at the French Open and the St. Petersburg Open, it’s tough to write someone like Pospisil out given his experience.

Here at the Vienna Open, Pospisil needed to qualify for the main draw with wins in the qualifiers and then came through in a shocking upset against Felix Auger-Aliassime. He won 7-5, 7-5 to seal his berth in the second round, breaking his fellow Canadian twice in the first set and once in the second.

Medvedev v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

A Medvedev win is a no-brainer, with offers of 1/5 for that result but Pospisil looks like he could offer some sort of a fight. Could look at the games market as a result.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 4/6 (bet365)
