Mannarino Smashes Sugita in Round Two
Having gotten himself a first round bye and following on from a solid performance in Cologne last week, Mannarino showed his mettle in getting past Japan’s Yuichi Sugita. What more, he did so in double quick time, needing just 61 minutes to ramrod his opponent.
Mannarino won 6-1, 6-1, breaking Sugita a total of five times in the match.
When Sugita won the first game of the match to 15, he might not have had an inkling of the things to come. Mannarino held to love, and went on a nine-game winning streak to lead 6-1, 3-0. It was finally in the fourth game of the second set that Sugita managed a hold before Mannarino rattled off three successive games again to lay down a marker in the quarterfinal.
This followed an excellent appearance in the quarterfinal at the Cologne Open last week, where he routed both Alexei Popyrin and Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. Even the defeat at the hands of the eventual champion, Germany’s Alexander Zverev looked to be a match which could go either way before the top-10 player edged out Mannarino.
This sudden spurt of form, especially against players ranked outside the top 20 would make McDonald quite nervous.

McDonald Slips Past Seppi
A slow start to his second round match against Andreas Seppi did not stop McDonald from sealing his own place in the quarterfinal.
A break in the very first service game from McDonald and some steady serving from Seppi allowed the latter to run away with the first set 6-3. In the second, however, the tide reversed when the American got the early break and he went on to take a 3-0 lead.
The pair exchanged a break of serve at 4-1, before McDonald served it out to level the match.
McDonald, who featured in the Istanbul Challenger last week as a qualifier and made the quarterfinal, then took the early advantage in the third set as well. This was after there were three breaks of serve to start the third set, and while Seppi drew level at 3-3, the American broke yet again in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead.
A hold to love and another break of serve meant McDonald had carved out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Seppi.
Mannarino v McDonald Prediction and Tip
Mannarino is 1/2 to win this and that should come as no surprise given his very recent form. Three of his previous four matches have resulted in a win and all of them in straight sets while his only loss, to the world number seven, was a hard-fought encounter.
