Tennys Sandgren v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head

The pair have met once before, and that was less than two weeks ago in the first round of the second event in Cologne. Herbert won that match in three sets.

Sandgren in Middle of Form Crunch

Sandgren is in the middle of a run of poor form, which dates back to after the Cincinnati Open where he reached the third-round. Since then, he has not been beyond the second-round of any event he has entered.

That sequence continued in St. Petersburg, where he was beaten in the first-round by the Russian wildcard Aslan Karatsov, and again in Cologne where he suffered that defeat to Herbert.

Things got no better in Antwerp last week where he was beaten in straight sets by Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, ranked 18 places below him in the world.

It was a match with only one break of serve in it, but that went to Vesely, who then kept his nerve the better in the second set tie-break.

Herbert Hopes to Convert Doubles Form into Singles

Herbert’s greatest successes on a tennis court have all come on a doubles’ court where, accompanied by his regular partner, Nicolas Mahut, he has completed a slam of Grand Slam titles. They also won the ATP Championship last November.

He is not quite so adept on a singles court, although as Sandgren found out two weeks ago in Cologne, he can still be a dangerous opponent.

However, after beating the American, he was comprehensively beaten in the next round by the Italian teenager Jannik Sinner.

Last week he suffered further disappointment and no little embarrassment when he failed to qualify for the Vienna Open. Worse still, the man who beat him, Vitaliy Sachko of the Ukraine, was ranked nearly 450 places below him in the world.

Herbert started that match well enough, taking the first set for the loss of one game, abut then his form deserted him and the Ukrainian hit back to claim the next two sets.

Sandgren v Herbert Prediction and Tip

Although the lower ranked player, Herbert has the psychological edge over Sandgren having beaten them in their one previous meeting just two weeks ago. He is also in the better form and playing in home conditions (albeit without crowds), will start the favourite for this match.

Tip: Herbert to win: 10/11 (bet365)
