Carreno Busta Will Aim To Make a Deep Run

Pablo Carreno Busta may not have added to his four career singles titles this year, but overall it has been a solid year for the 29 year old. In September, the Spaniard reached the semifinal of the U.S. Open for the second time in his career, having made it that far in 2017, and followed that up with a run to the quarterfinals of the French Open, also for the second time in his career, having reached the last eight at Roland Garros in 2017.

A part of the Spanish team that finished runner-up in the inaugural ATP Cup, Carreno Busta was a semifinalist in Rotterdam and a quarterfinalist in Adeliade earlier this year. He also made it to the third round of the Australian Open before being knocked out by Rafael Nadal. Overall, he is 13-9 on hard courts this year.

Coming into the Paris Masters with 17-11 win-loss record this year, Carreno Busta was earlier this week knocked out of the Vienna Open by Kevin Anderson in the Round of 16.

It will be a fifth main draw appearance at Paris Masters for Carreno Busta, who has never gone past the second round of the tournament, having reached that stage in 2016 and 2017. Overall in Masters 1000 events, he has reached the semifinals twice (Indian Wells in 2017 and Miami in 2018).

It will be interesting to see how deep can he go in this year’s event. If he does get past Gaston in the first round, he will play the winner of the first round match between Nikoloz Basilashvili and Jan-Lennard Struff.

Gaston Looking To Make an Impression

Facing Carreno Busta in the first round will be 20-year-old Frenchman Hugo Gaston who shot to prominence at this year’s French Open, where he defeated Maxime Janvier, Yoshihito Nishioka and Stanislas Wawrinka in the first three rounds before falling to Dominic Thiem in a closely contested five-setter.

The left-hander, who won four of eight Futures finals in 2019, qualified for the Hamburg Challenger this week but failed to go past the Round of 16, falling to Austria’s Sebastian Ofner in straight sets.

Gaston, who reached the semifinal of Challenger Bergamo earlier this year, has a 3-2 overall record at the top level this year. His Grand Slam main draw debut in Melbourne in 2020 was short-lived as he lost to Jaume Munar in the first round.

Carreno Busta v Gaston Prediction and Tip

Despite the promise of the 20-year-old, Carreno Busta will be favoured to win this contest. Expect the Spaniard to win in straight sets.

Tip: Carreno Busta to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
