Borna Coric v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

These players have faced off twice in the past including once at the Futures competition level in 2013. Coric has won both, with the second match having come at the US Open this year where Coric marched into the quarterfinal with a straight-set victory.

Coric Overcomes Fucsovics

Coric was off to a quick start against Marton Fucosvics in his opening round match here in Paris, breaking his opponent to love in the third game of the first set. Fucsovics, however, made a quick comeback by breaking back immediately and then held serve to push it into a tie-breaker.

A turnaround looked to be on the cards when Coric fell behind 0-3 in the tie-breaker, but the Croat then won four points in a row to reclaim the advantage. And while Fucsovics got a mini-break back, he dropped his serve while serving at 5-6 to concede the opening set.

With a close set won, Coric grew in confidence and quickly broke his opponent early to go 3-0 up, and repeated the dose in the sixth game as well before serving it out in the next game, winning 7-6, 6-1.

Coric had earlier made it to the final of the St. Petersburg Open before he came up against the immovable force of Andrey Rublev and then was ousted in the second round of the Vienna Open by the world number one Novak Djokovic. He can take pride from the fact it has taken two of the best current players to get past him in recent times.

Thompson Registers Rare Win

Federico Delbonis is a formidable opponent on clay but having struggled to make it to the main draw of this competition, Thompson always looked like he had an upper hand against him. And that’s how the match went, with the Aussie clinching a 6-2, 6-3 win in his opening round match against Delbonis to win his first match ever at the Paris Masters.

Thompson broke Delbonis for the first time in the fifth game and then consolidated that with a second break of serve in the seventh. He then served it out to clinch the opening set before making it three breaks in a row when he went 2-0 up in the second set.

Delbonis did not come close to breaking back and left to serve to stay in the match at 3-5, the Argentine was broken to 15 again as he went down easily to Thompson. Interestingly, Thompson himself hadn’t shown too much form having lost five of his previous six matches including three indoors.

And while this win will prove to be bit of a relief, it will take a lot more to overcome an in-form Coric in this encounter.

Coric v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Such has been Coric’s rhythm, he starts off 1/8 to win this and is 4/9 to win it in straight sets. Looking at the latter to be a safe call.

Tip: Coric to win in straight sets: 4/9 (bet365)
