Richard Gasquet v Roberto Carballés Baena Head to Head
This will be the second time these two will face off in a competitive match with the first having come in 2016 at the Madrid Masters. Gasquet had won that opening round encounter in straight sets.

Ever since tennis returned to the fore following the break for the pandemic, Gasquet’s form has left a lot to desire. In fact in no tournament – other than the exhibition competition of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown – has the Frenchman managed to put together two wins in a row.
Second round exits at the Cincinnati Masters, US Open and the recently-concluded Paris Masters have been his best showing to go with three other opening round ousters.
Things had only been slightly better earlier though, with Gasquet having begun the season only in February. Quarterfinals in Montpellier and Dubai but injury issues earlier in January have meant Gasquet’s more or less where he was at the start of the season, ranking-wise.
Had it not been for the pandemic and the changed ranking rules, he would have majorly slipped down the charts too. Can he end the season on bit of a high and finally win a couple of matches in a row?

Carballés Baena Struggling Too
If Gasquet’s form has been poor, it’s been worse for his opponent, the Spaniard Carballes Baena who enters this tournament on the back of a three-match losing streak.
He had surprised a few by getting to the third at Roland-Garros which included a win over Denis Shapovalov, but since winning his opening round match at the Sardinia Open he hasn’t won anything. A second round defeat in Sardinia was followed by an opening loss at the Marbella Challenger and another qualifying defeat at the Paris Masters.
As far as playing indoors is concerned, the Spaniard hasn’t had a great overall record either. He didn’t play any matches on the surface before 2018 and overall has won just two main draw matches in tournaments played on it in his career.
It will need him to make a major turnaround to try and carve out a win here.
