This will be the first match ever played between Shapovalov and Albot.

Shapovalov in a Shocking Slump

When Shapovalov made it to the quarterfinal of the US Open and followed it up with a semifinal at the Rome Masters, the Canadian looked to be in with a serious chance of qualifying for the ATP Finals.

While a second round loss at the French Open might not have helped his chances, Shapovalov then made it to the semifinal of the St. Petersburg – a match he lost to the in-form Russian Andrey Rublev. That, unfortunately, kick-started a run of three successive defeats including back to back opening losses to unfancied opponents.

At the second Cologne Open, Shapovalov went down to Gilles Simon in three sets but worse was to follow at the Vienna Open. Facing the Austrian wildcard Jurij Rodionov, it looked like Shapovalov had failed to turn up as he went down in straight sets. This was an opponent who had gone into the match at 11/2 to surprise his opponent.

The Canadian will hope he can arrest the slide now that the pressure of making the ATP Finals is off him, and go deeper into the tournament, his last of the season.

Albot Continues Sparkle with Easy Opening Win

While Shapovalov had a first round bye, Albot had to go through the rigours of making it to the second round. He did that in fine style though, thumping the Japanese Yuichi Sugita in straight sets, registering a 6-4, 6-1 victory over his opponent.

Albot had a chance to break Sugita in the very first game of the match before doing that in the third, taking a 3-1 lead in the process. There were no further breaks of serve in the set and that suited Albot well as he wrapped it off by serving to love in the 10th game.

Any hopes of a comeback were quashed when Albot broke Sugita in the very first game of the second set, and consolidated it with a second break in the fifth game of the set. A demoralised Sugita then dropped his serve yet again as he looked to serve to stay in the match, losing in an hour and 16 minutes.

The Moldovan now has a handful of an opponent against him but confidence is a funny thing – something that Albot looks to have plenty of and Shapovalov is struggling with. Can there be a surprise in the offing here?

Shapovalov v Albot Prediction and Tip

While Shapovalov is 1/6 to win this, we think the match could be a lot closer than that. Albot might surprise his opponent by winning at least a set.

Tip: Albot to win a set – Yes: 6/4 (bet365)
