Auger-Aliassime Looking To End 2020 On a High

Twenty-year old Felix Auger-Aliassime qualified for three ATP finals in 2019, and with a mixed shortened season in 2020, has so far done the same appearing in three finals. However, with six ATP finals in his very short career thus far, he has put together some very impressive performances,  but is yet to win his first career title.

At the start of the year, Auger- Aliassime was a finalist at back-to-back tournaments, at the Rotterdam 500 and the ATP 250 at Marseille, where he lost to Gael Monfils, and Stefanos Tsitsipas respectively.

He had mixed performances at the French & US Opens respectively after the Covid-19 hiatus,  but looked back in touch for the indoor swing to culminate the season.  He was a finalist to Alexander Zverev in the first week at Cologne and lost in the semi-finals to Diego Schwartzman in the next.

However, the last two weeks in Vienna and Paris were underwhelming for the young Canadian, losing to Vasek Pospisil and Marin Cilic early on in the competition. In his last tournament of 2020, Auger-Aliassime is the second seed and after a first round bye, will be looking for a deep run in a relatively less crowded field here in Sofia.

Can Caruso Show Spark On The Faster Surfaces?

Italian Salvatore Caruso has been on the ATP tour since the middle of the last decade and is a natural clay courter with success at the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures level, winning five ITF Futures titles.

Caruso had his best performance in a major at this year’s US Open making the round of 32, and equalling his 2019 French Open accomplishments. His US Open campaign saw him reach a career high of 80 in the ATP world rankings. He has made some other rounds of 32, at the Paris Masters last week and in Rome earlier in the season as well.

He was up against little known Dimitar Kuzmanov in the opener here and after losing the first set 4-6, did well to come back to win the next two sets with the same scoreline. The Italian will need to play at a much better level to be a valid threat to Auger-Aliasime.

Auger-Aliassime v Caruso Prediction and Tip

A relatively straightforward opener for the young Canadian; expect him to prevail in straight sets without much ado.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
