Mannarino Wins a Fluctuating Quarterfinal

It was bit of a curious quarterfinal for Mannarino, played over three sets against Radu Albot. The sense one got was it was more of a case of three different one-set matches instead of one match which consisted of three sets, such was the difference in the play.

It began with Mannarino breaking Albot in the very first game and then doubling down on the advantage with another break of serve in the fifth game. Mannarino served out for the set in the eighth game, winning to 15 to take the first set.

All of a sudden, the tide reversed in the second. It was Albot’s turn to break Mannarino off his very service game, racing off to a 4-1 lead in the set. Another break to love followed before he wrapped up the equaliser by winning the next game on his own serve.

And after these two one-sided sets, it was a more tightly-fought final set. Mannarino broke in the fourth game while Albot had two break-points to get it back to parity in the very next game but lost out on the opportunities. The rest of the set went on serve, allowing Mannarino to wrap up the victory, helping him make his second semifinal in three tournaments.

Earlier, he had beaten Martin Klizan and Egor Gerasimov to enter the last eight, after having being a losing quarterfinalist at Cologne, finalist at the Nur-Sultan Open, and having made the third round of the Paris Masters.

It’s the kind of form which could help him test even an opponent rated that highly.

Sinner Overcomes Slow Start

In what was tipped to be a very close match, Sinner came through his quarterfinal against Alex de Minaur in three sets but the encounter got easier for him as it went on.

The first set saw him get an early break only to lose the advantage the very next game. No other breaks of serve took the set into a tie-breaker in which Sinner lost the early initiative when he fell 3-1 behind. The world number 44 put up bit of a fight before surrendering the opening set.

Sinner wasn’t going to go away without a fight and once he had got more control over his serve, he managed to take advantage of the way things were going. First he broke de Minaur in the seventh game, then warded off a couple of break points before serving it out at 5-3.

And in the decider, Sinner, who has been tipped to be the future number one by the current world number one, Novak Djokovic, raced off to a 4-0 lead. His Aussie opponent won a game but was broken to love yet again, allowing Sinner to complete a 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Earlier, Sinner had been pushed a tad by Swiss man Marc-Andre Huesler in his second round but had come through in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-4. The match had seen the Italian clinch both sets with a solitary break of serve.

Sinner also registered a 6-2, 6-4 win over Marton Fucsovics in the first round and is 11-6 on indoor courts this season.

Sinner v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

This looks like a one-sided match on paper, with Sinner starting out at 2/9 to win it and 8/13 to do that in straight sets. That’s how this could pan out.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 8/13 (bet365)
