Elise Mertens v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the two players.

Elise Mertens brings a perfect head-to-head record, having won all of their two previous meetings. She did so in a 2016 ITF circuit in Moscow on an indoor hard court, and recently in the 2020 Cincinnati Open on a hard court, the latter being a straight-sets win.

Mertens Has Entertaining Encounter With Zvonareva

Five-time title winner Elise Mertens had an entertaining clash with Vera Zvonareva.

The Belgian entered the match as the outright favorite and immediately proved it by breaking Zvonareva twice and rescuing a breakpoint in the first five games to take a 4-1 lead. Zvonareva broke her once after that, but Mertens held on to claim the set 6-4.

The second set was the bizarre one. Zvonareva began all guns blazing and took a 4-0 lead. Mertens fought back and tied the games 5-5, but Zvonareva dug deep and won the last two games to take the set 7-5 in a total of one hour and ten minutes. Additionally, there were 16 break points in the whole of the second set, three of which were converted by Zvonareva and two by Mertens.

Unlike the previous set, the third was just one-way traffic. Mertens began the third set as her opponent had the second by taking a 4-0 lead. Zvonareva fought back to bring it back to 4-2, but Mertens held on to win 6-2.

Mertens now qualifies for her eighth quarter-final of the year but is still chasing a title in 2020. She’s won a title in every year she’s played since 2017 and is of great value to clinch this one in Austria. Recent Ostrava Open winner Aryna Sabalenka and Mertens are the bookies’ favorites for this title in Austria.

Kudermetova Rises Past Rus

World no. 46 Veronika Kudermetova prevailed in her second-round match against Arantxa Rus. She came in as a 1/3 favorite against her opponent and immediately began strong, earning two break points in the first game and converting one of them. That proved crucial, as she ended up winning the set 6-4.

The second set, however, was all Rus. She dominated her opponent and won 26 points to Kudermetova’s 10. Rus also got two break points in that set, both of which she ended up converting, while Kudermetova fluffed the only break point she got in the second set. All that cumulated in Rus taking the set 6-1.

Normalcy resumed for Kudermetova in the third set. She got two break points, one of which she converted, which ended up proving crucial as she won the set 6-3 and in doing so won the tie as well.

The Russian, who is still chasing her maiden WTA title, now walks into her third quarter-final of the season. She reached similar positions in the Ostrava Open, where she lost to Jennifer Brady, and in the Hobart International, where a walkover past Garbine Muguruza gave her a path to the semi-finals.

Mertens v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

Mertens is the favorite and should be expected to make it to another semi-final. These two, however, enjoy having entertaining clashes and have also proven to notch a high number of games in those fixtures. Therefore, good value can be found in anticipating a large number of total games, or in expecting for the match to have more than two sets.

Tip: Match to have three sets: 6/4 (bet365)
