Pablo Andujar v Ivo Karlovic Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the first round of the Miami Masters in 2019, Andujar winning on that occasion in straight sets.

Andujar Back to Pre-Injury Levels

Andujar’s career suffered a major setback five years ago, when he was forced to undergo three elbow surgeries, and, at one point, he contemplated retirement. However, he fought his way back to fitness, and, in 2018, he won the last of his four ATP titles.

He has not won since, but ended 2010 ranked 59 in the world, his highest career ranking for six years.

Primarily regarded as a clay court player, his best result last year came in the Challenger event in Prostejov in the Czech Republic, where he got to the final, and then reached the semi-final of the follow-up event in Iasi, Romania.

On the main ATP tour, his best most recent results came in Sardinia and the European Open in Antwerp where he got to the second round. However, his last match was a first round defeat to Yoshida Nishikori at the Paris Masters.

Karlovic, the Grand Old Man of the ATP Tour

At an age when most of his contemporaries have long since hung up their racquets and put their feet up in front of the fire, Karlovic is still going, though at the age of 41, he is now the Grand Old Man of the ATP tour.

He still possesses the powerful serve that has stood him in such good stead for many years, but these days the legs and the stamina are not what they once were, and he is vulnerable to younger opponents, especially in long matches.

Now ranked outside the top 100 for the first time since 2002, it has been three years since he won the last of his titles, and it is unrealistic to expect him to appear in the winners’ circle again.

Karlovic played sparingly in 2020, and failed to get beyond the first round in any ATP event he entered. His last two appearances were at the French Open and the Cologne Open, but he failed to get beyond the qualifying stage in either.

Andujar v Karlovic Prediction and Tip

Andujar will begin as the clear favourite to win this match against the Croatian veteran. Karlovic can always rely on his serve to keep him competitive, but he does not have the legs any more to stay with younger opponents.

.Tip: Andujar to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
