Gianluca Mager v Christian Harrison Head to Head

This will be the first match ever Mager and Christian Harrison, the younger brother of former world number 40, Ryan. Interestingly, Mager had beaten Ryan Harrison in a previous round here.

Mager Stuns Querrey in Second Round

After having needed three sets to eke out a narrow win over Ryan Harrison in the first round, Mager went into his second round match against Sam Querrey as a second favourite by some distance. In fact, Querrey was 1/4 to win it and the way he begun looked like the match was going to the script.

Mager was broken in the sixth game and very soon was serving to stay in the set at 2-5. He held on, then broke back before carving out successive holds to push the set into a tie-breaker.

And even there, it wasn’t easy going for Mager, whose highest ranking ever is 77th. An early mini-break allowed him a 3-0 lead, but Querrey kept himself in the hunt by levelling things up at 4-4. The American had a set-point at 6-5 and then again at 7-6 but Mager fought tooth and nail to prevent that and then won it 10-8.

The second set became a lot easier for Mager, who broke first in the fourth game and then again in the 6th to complete a 6-1 win soon after.

He now faces an opponent who has fallen drastically in the rankings over the years.

Christian Harrison Hoping to Continue Rare Good Form

It was in 2018 that Harrison hit career-best ATP ranking of 198th in the world, but since then the fall has been rather dramatic. So much so that at one point in 2020, he had jumped out of the top 1000 on the charts.

On the back of a couple of some qualifications for the main draw of Challenger tournament, Harrison broke back into the top 800, which earned him a wild-card into the qualifiers here. And by making the main draw here, and then winning a further two encounters, Christian sure has ensured he will be back in the top 500 when the new rankings are posted.

Harrison did this by first clinching a straight-set victory over Tomas Etcheverry of Argentina before claiming the big fish, the top seeded Cristian Garin.

The American won 7-6, 6-2 against a player ranked some 770 places ahead of him and by the dint of that result alone, he can take a lot of confidence home whatever happens from here on.

Mager v Harrison Prediction and Tip

What’s interesting to note is that Christian Harrison starts off a favourite at 8/13 while Mager is 13/10 to win this. Given Harrison’s inexperience in going all the way in a while, we will refrain from that option, instead opting for the games market.

Tip: Over 22.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
