Cori Gauff v Jil Teichmann Head to Head

The two have never faced each other in a competitive match before. This will be the first-ever encounter between the 16-year-old American and the 23-year-old Swiss.

Gauff Hoping To Improve On Abu Dhabi Run

Gauff started the year by making it to the second round of the Abu Dhabi Open, although she definitely would have been hoping to make it further into the tournament.

She began that tournament strongly, bettering Ulrikke Eikeri in straight sets in a match that saw her concede only one game and nearly double Eikeri’s points. Even though Gauff’s Norwegian opponent was a last-minute alternate, the teenager still managed to take care of business in a relatively short and impressive time.

Her second-round match, however, proved to be a tougher test that she was unable to overcome. She faced a seeded Maria Sakkari, an eventual semi-finalist, who managed to better her in straight sets in a closely contested affair.

She began that match strongly by winning the first three games to take a 3-0 lead. Sakkari, however, broke her four times after that and eventually took the first set 7-5. The second set, unlike the first, was one-way traffic that tilted Sakkari’s way. It ended 6-2, marking the end of Gauff’s tournament participation.

Despite that early elimination, Gauff still had a lot of positives to take from that tournament. Her most crucial takeaways were experience and exposure—two things that players her age desire more than anything.

That very experience could prove to be a crucial factor for her in this tournament and the forthcoming Australian Open.

Teichmann’s Mixed 2020

Despite reaching the final in Lexington last year, Teichmann had a mixed year that mostly consisted of bad results.

She only made it past the second round on one other occasion other than in Lexington, and she even struggled on her favored clay, winning only two of the five matches that she played on the surface.

In her last five tournaments, she was eliminated in the first round in four of them; something that she’ll definitely want to improve upon this year. Having not taken part in the Abu Dhabi open, this will be her first tournament of the year, and she’d definitely want to start her tennis season with a great result.

However, she faces the challenge of a rising teenage star that’s had an impressive rise. Add to this her statistical hard-court woes, and this match seems destined to head in one direction.

Gauff v Teichmann Prediction and Tip

Gauff is the favorite in this match—rightfully so. She comes in at 4/11 but is also of great value to achieve this win in straight sets. If she takes control of the match early on, a win in straight sets should be more than guaranteed.

Tip: Gauff to win in straight sets: 10/11 (bet365)
