Lorenzo Sonego v Jason Kubler Head to Head

This will be the first time that the 25-year-old Italian, and the Australian, two years his senior, will meet at this level.

Sonego Looking to Continue his Career Progression

Although he made his name as a clay court player, Sonego won his first ATP title last year on the hard courts of the Vienna Open where he beat Andrey Rublev in the final. That was a year after losing the final of the Antalya Open on grass.

2020 also saw him reach the fourth round of the US Open, his best ever showing in a Grand Slam. That combined with his success in Austria propelled him to a career high world ranking.

In fact, he has been progressing steadily each year, rising from 812 at the end of 2014 to his current standing, something he will be looking to continue in 2021.

This will be his first competitive match of the year. He was last in action at the Paris Masters in November, where he beat Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the first round, before going down to another Australian, Alex de Minaur, in the second.

Former Junior Number One Kubler Hoping to Make a Mark

A former junior world number one, Kubler has never been able to fulfil his potential because of a series of serious knee injuries which have forced him to spend more time over the years on the treatment table than the practice court.

Despite that, he is still had some success on the junior tours, winning 10 ITF and five Challenger Tour titles, the most recent of which came in Gabineau in Canada in 2019.

His highest career ranking was in 2018 when he was briefly 91 in the world, and that was the same year he achieved his best showing in a Grand Slam, reaching the second round of the US Open.

However, he has missed out on his home Grand Slam this time round. In the qualifying competition in the Middle Est he beat compatriot Matthew Ebden in the first round after a three set battle, but then lost in the second to the Ukrainian veteran Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets..

Sonego v Kubler Prediction and Tip

This should be a good way for Sonego to get his 2021 up and running and gain some valuable match practice. He should win with ease against a man who has failed to qualify for his home Grand Slam.

Tip: Sonego to win: 1/3 (bet365)
