Marin Cilic v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

This will be the seventh meeting between the 43rd-ranked Cilic and World No. 66 Chardy, with the former leading 4-2 head to head. Cilic leads 2-1 on hard courts and 1-0 on grass, while they both have won once each on clay. Most recently, they met in the quarterfinals in Moscow in 2019, which the Croatian won in three.

Cilic Looking to Arrest Slide

2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic reached a career-high ranking of 3 in 2018. Since then it’s been a story of constant decline for the 32-year-old, who has failed to win a single title over the last two years.

From 2008 to 2018, Cilic captured as many as 18 titles, never ending a season without one, but the last two years have been barren ones for him as he struggled to make deeper runs into tournaments.

In 2019, Cilic featured in just one semifinal, while in 2020, he failed to go past the Round of 16 in any of the tournaments.

A runner-up at Wimbledon in 2017 and at the Australian Open in 2018, Cilic was beaten by Milos Raonic in the fourth round of the Melbourne slam last season. Later, at the U.S. Open, he reached the third round of the competition before being knocked out by Dominic Thiem, who also beat him at the French Open, winning the first round contest in straight sets.

Cilic was beaten in the first round in four other tournaments in 2020, while he could only reach as far as the Round of 16 in Rome and Paris Maters, as he ended the season with a 14-12 singles record. The Croatian will be hoping for a good start in Melbourne as he looks to rediscover his lost form.

Chardy Looks to Build on Good Start

Jeremy Chardy has had a good start to the year as he reached the semifinals of the Antalya Open earlier this month.

Having beaten Radu Albot in straight sets in the first round, Chardy had to battle past third seed Fabio Fognini in the second round, which saw the two play out three tiebreaks, before the Frenchman finally closed out the contest to advance. Chardy played another sapping three-setter against Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarterfinal, before holding off the German in the third set tiebreak.

In the semis, against Alexander Bublik, Chardy came back from a set down to force the decider but the Kazakh saw off the Frenchman’s challenge in the third to enter the final. Bublik eventually finished runner-up, losing the final to Alex de Minaur.

The 33-year-old Chardy has won just one singles title in his career, which came in Stuttgart in 2009. When it comes to doubles, the French journeyman has seven career titles.

Currently ranked 66th in the world, Chardy ended 2020 with a 2-5 record, which followed a 28-27 2019 season.

Having begun the year well, Chardy will look to build on that start.

Cilic v Chardy Prediction and Tip

Cilic will be making his first appearance this season, while Chardy has already made an impact in Antalya and could carry that form to Melbourne. This should be a good contest, but expect Cilic to advance into the next round.

Tip: Cilic to win: 5/4 (bet365)
