Aryna Sabalenka v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

There have been no previous matches between the world number seven Sabalenka and the 94th-ranked Kanepi.

Sabalenka at Career-Best after Abu Dhabi

Sabalenka was among those who kick-started her season at the WTA Abu Dhabi which was played earlier in January and continuing from where she had left off last season, the Belarusian went on to win the title there. That win in Abu Dhabi means she is on a 15-match winning streak, a run that includes title victories in Linz and Ostrava last year.

And it’s not as if Sabalenka hasn’t faced any of the top opponents while carving out these victories.

Cori Gauff, Jennifer Brady and Victoria Azarenka were all sent packing in Ostrava, Elise Mertens was defeated in the final at Linz, while earlier this year, she overcame Ons Jabeur, Elena Rybakina and Maria Sakkari en route her title win.

So clinical has her form been that Sabalenka has now moved to third in the list of favourites for the Australian Open women’s singles title, behind Naomi Osaka and Ash Barty – leaving Serena Williams, Simona Halep and Sofia Kenin behind.

Wouldn’t be too much to expect her to make it 16 wins in a row here.

Kanepi Pulls the Mat from Under Sharma

Astra Sharma was 6-1, 5-3 up in her opening round match against Kanepi but just when one thought the Estonian was done in the match, she stormed back to carve out a stunning three-set win over her Aussie opponent.

Kanepi broke Sharma to level the second set at 5-5 before repeating the dose in the 12th game of the set to clinch it. And with Sharma still wondering what hit her, Kanepi raced away to an easy 6-2 win in the final set which consisted of the world number 94 breaking the Aussie every time she served.

The Estonian is coming off a season in which she won three titles at the lower circuit, but her only two match wins at the WTA level came in the first rounds of the US Open and French Open before she lost in the second round.

In an interesting coincidence, much like Sabaleka, Kanepi also ended the previous season with two title victories, albeit on the ITF circuit.

Sabalenka v  Kanepi Prediction and Tip

This has all the makings of a one-sided, straight-set win for the uber-confident Sabalenka. Expecting a thrashing here for Kanepi.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in straight set: 1/3 (bet365)
