Muchova Returns after Pulling Out of Abu Dhabi

World No. 27 Karolina Muchova will kickstart her Melbourne campaign on Monday, when she faces unseeded American Catherine McNally in the Round of 32 after being given a first round bye.

The 2019 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, also featured in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, where she won her first round match against Montenegro’s Danka Kovinic in straight sets but pulled out of the tournament later due to illness.

An aggressive all-court player, Muchova didn’t have a great 2020 season, finishing with a 7-8 record, but will be satisfied with her U.S. Open performance where she reached the Round of 16 (her best showing at Flushing Meadows) before falling to Victoria Azarenka in three sets.

On Sunday, Muchova began her doubles campaign in Melbourne, making a winning start with partner Marketa Vandrousova, as the pair picked a straight sets win over Lizette Cabrera and Maddison Inglis in the Round of 32.

Muchova, who picked her only WTA singles title at the Korean Open in 2019, will be hoping to stay fit over the next few weeks as she eyes bigger gains in Melbourne.

The 19-year-old, who reached the third round of the U.S. Open last year by beating Viktoria Kuzmova and Ekaterina Alexandrova, featured in the Australian Open qualification earlier this year.

While she won her first qualifying round against Daria Snigur, her progress was halted in the second qualifier by France’s Harmony Tan.

A two-time doubles champion on the Tour, McNaly was the 2018 girls’ runner-up at the French Open.

Muchova v McNally Prediction and Tip

While McNally is seen as a bright young talent, she will find it tough against her experienced opponent. It should be a straight-forward win for Muchova.

Tip: Muchova to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
