Karolina Pliskova v Elisabetta Cocciaretto Head to Head
This will be the first time that Pliskova and Cocciaretto will be facing off in a competitive encounter on the WTA circuit.

It was a curtailed season in the end but Pliskova wouldn’t have been too impressed by the way she went about her tennis in 2020. There was an early title in the season, at Brisbane, which was her third in Australia in her career, and towards the end of the year, Pliskova made it to the final at the Rome Open as well.
For a player who has been in the top five for a while now, however, that did not seem enough. Particularly when the rest of the results showed consistency in being inconsistent.
Other than the aforementioned couple of performances, Pliskova won back to back matches in a single tournament only once – that came at the Australian Open last year when she reached the third round.
Pliskova arrived into 2021 with a change in coaching staff, but did not have the best of starts at Abu Dhabi. After needing a tough tie-breaker against the 277th-ranked Despina Papamichail in her opener there, the Czech fell to the Anastasia Gasanova, another player ranked outside the top 200, in the second round.
With confidence obviously shaken, it would be interesting to see how she manages to turn things around starting with her match against a player ranked 132nd in the world at the moment.

Cocciaretto Turns Around a Bagel
Coming into her first round match here in Melbourne, Cocciaretto had played three matches this season, all of which were a part of the Australian Open qualifiers and won them all without dropping a set. Which is why the onlookers were in for a massive surprise when the Italian lost the first set of her first round match against Lin Zhu 6-0.
Parity was restored when she went up a break in the second set, but when Cocciaretto was broken twice in succession to fall behind 2-3, the writing seemed to be on the wall. Again.
Cocciaretto fought back to win the next four games and the set only to get broken early in the third again. She failed to win the break back with Lu serving for the match at 5-3, but then out of nowhere the 132nd-ranked player broke back twice in a row to claim the match, winning the set 7-5.
She now faces a stiff test but one in which she knows she can take advantage of her opponent’s form issues.
Pliskova v Cocciaretto Prediction and Tip
While Pliskova is 1/5 to win this, we expect Cocciaretto to fight tooth and nail to try and exploit the Czech’s weaknesses and even win a set here.
