Simona Halep v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

We spoke about this being an interesting one and the reason for that is their head to head. Despite Halep being a higher quality player with way better results, it is Siegemund who leads this number 2-1. All three matches came on clay with Siegemund winning the first two in Sttutgart and Halep pulling one back at Rome in 2017.

Siegemund Living up to Her Favourite Billing

First at the Abu Dhabi Open first round match and now in these two matches in Melbourne, the 51st-ranked Siegemund has started off as a favourite. And while she lost a tough three-setter to Kirsten Flipkens in the previous tournament, she has lived up to this billing in both her matches here.

First against Monica Niculescu, Siegemund carved out a 7-5, 6-4 win after having gone in at 1/3 odds to win their opener.

And then facing Dastanee Aiava and starting out at 1/4, she was rarely troubled in the one hour seven minute stay she had on court. Siegemund won 6-2, 6-2 after breaking her opponent five times in the match and dropping her own serve just once.

In fact in both the sets, Siegemund took a nearly unassailable lead of 4-0 and whatever Aiava did after that proved to be academic as the German came through to book her place in round three.

Halep Pulls Past Potapova in Opener

It was expected to be a straightforward win for Halep and while she did register a straight-set win, the Romanian needed an hour and 22 minutes to make it to the third round. And there were occasions during the match Halep needed to dig deep into her reserves to make it past her Russian opponent.

For instance, in the first set, Halep drew first blood by breaking Potapova in the very first game only to be broken right back in the second. Another break of serve followed in the third game, a decisive one for Halep who went on to hold the remaining ones and clinch the opening set.

The second set again had Halep facing a tricky situation when Potapova managed to get one past her by breaking the world number two in the fourth game. Much like in the first set then, Halep broke immediately after and then again in the ninth game to serve for the match.

The Romanian completed the formalities soon after but will have to be a lot tighter coming into her third round encounter against a potentially tricky opponent.

Halep v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Interesting to note Halep starts off 1/7 to win this while we could be looking at Siegemund providing some fight in the contest. A games handicap favouring Siegemund looks a good bet.

Tip: Games Handicap Siegemund +5.5: 10/11 (bet365)
