Daniil Medvedev v Kei Nishikori Head to Head

This will be the fifth meeting between the two players.

They are currently tied 2-2 on head-to-head meetings. Daniil Medvedev’s two wins came in the 2018 Japan Open on an indoor hard court, and most recently in the 2019 Barcelona Open on a clay court.

On the other hand, Kei Nishikori’s two wins came in the 2019 Brisbane International on a hard court and in the 2018 Monte-Carlo Masters on a clay court.

Medvedev Rises Against Schwartzman

Medvedev, the World No. 4, got his playing year to a great start after defeating Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on day 1 of the ATP Cup. This win was his fifth straight win over the Argentine, which also took his overall set record to 10-1 against Schwartzman.

Medvedev dominated proceedings early on and took a 3-0 lead in the first set after breaking Schwartzman in the second game of the set.

He, however, failed to capitalize on two break points that came his way in the fourth game of that set, which gave Schwartzman a route back into the tie. Schwartzman capitalized on this by winning the next three games to even the score at 3-3.

They both broke each other once again, and at 5-4, Medvedev failed to capitalize on two set point opportunities. However, he won the last two games of that set, rounding off the first set 7-5.

The second set proved to be a similarly close affair, but Medvedev’s six aces and two converted break points to Schwartzman’s one successful break point proved to be decisive in settling the match.

Nishikori Hoping For An Injury-Free 2021

Recent Injury woes in the past few years have stalled Nishikori’s progress.

The 12-time ATP winner only played in four tournaments in 2020. This was after he recovered from a long-term elbow injury sustained in the 2019 US Open that made him have to sit out the first few months of the season.

Injury problems also came back to haunt him towards the end of the season after he was forced to withdraw from the Antwerp Open and end his season prematurely.

In total, he played six matches in the entirety of the 2020 tour but only ended up winning two of them. He’ll be hoping to have a steadier season with fewer injuries as he looks to climb back on the ATP rankings.

Medvedev v Nishikori Prediction and Tip

In perfect circumstances, this would have been a hard match to call. However, Nishikori’s lack of match action and a slow return to playing gives Medvedev a greater advantage coming into this tie.

Add the Russian’s recent magnificent ATP finals winning form, and the match seems destined to tilt in one direction.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
