Petra Kvitova v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head

This is the first time Kvitova will be facing the world number 47 Podoroska in a competitive encounter.

Kvitova Stretched but Wins in Straight

With Venus Williams having shown what she is capable of in the first round and with Kvitova having gotten herself an opening bye, there was always that feeling it wouldn’t be the easiest encounter. As it turned out, Kvitova did win in two sets but not before she survived some nervous moments in both the sets.

Venus, who had an appalling 2020 season, raced away to a 3-1 lead in the first set before Kvitova broke back, brought parity and pushed the set into a tie-breaker. She then took a 3-0 lead and soon had three set-points to close out the set but Venus fought back to close it down to 6-6.

Fortunately for Kvitova, she managed to keep her nerve and won her next two points to clinch the set.

Bouyed by that, a supremely confident-looking Kvitova then ran away to take a 4-1 lead of her own only to drop serve and for Venus to make it 4-4. Three holds later, however, Kvitova broke Venus as she looked to serve to stay in the match and completed her victory in two hours of gruelling tennis.

Having kick-started her season with a match of this kind should augur well for Kvitova, helping shrug off whatever rustiness must have built up.

Podoroska Dominates Proceedings Again

A shock loss at the Abu Dhabi Open opened a few question-marks but Podoroska seems to have shut them tight with a couple of performances to remember.

Sure, she was a favourite going into both her first two rounds of this tournament, but it’s one thing to start as an on-paper winner and quite another to deliver the goods – especially in women’s tennis.

Which is why, after defeating Francesca Jones 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round in Melbourne, for Podoroska to continue with that same run and crushing Greet Minnen’s hopes brings Podoroska back as one of the young guns to watch out for this season.

In a match lasting an hour and 17 minutes, Podoroska did not have too many issues in the first set and while she fell a break behind in the second on a couple of occasions, trailing 3-1 at one stage, the Argentine raced to win five of the next six games to close out the match.

Kvitova v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

While Kvitova is 2/7 to win this, Podoroska has given enough indication of her quality and we can expect this to be a tough encounter.

Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 10/11 (bet365)
