Novak Djokovic v Alexander Zverev  Head to Head

This will be the seventh meeting between the two players with Djokovic leading the head-to-head 4-2. Their last meeting was at the 2020 ATP Tour Finals round robin stages in London with Djokovic winning in straight sets.

10-0 at ATP Cup; Djokovic Marching On

With his singles and doubles wins against Canada, and the performances leading to the 2020 title, Novak Djokovic is now 10-0 at the ATP Cup. With Dusan Lajovic being defeated by Milos Raonic in the tournament opener, Djokovic featured in the ‘must-win’ match against Denis Shapovalov and since then there was no looking back.

Djokovic and Shapovalov were locked in two tight sets that lasted over two hours, and while the Canadian brought some excellent tennis with him, he was unable to outdo the world number one on the big points. Two breaks of serve, one each in either set, with Shapovalov serving at 5-6 were sufficient for a 7-5, 7-5 win for the Serb. Later he joined forces with Filip Krajinovic to ensure that Serbia won their doubles and the tie against Canada.

Djokovic looked in prime touch and seemed to have shaken off any of the discomfort from the hand blisters that he alluded to at the Adelaide Exhibition last week. As the tournament and Australian season progresses, one can only envision the Serb getting better with every match and is already solidifying his spot as the one to beat for most of February here in Melbourne.

Zverev Upbeat After Close Shapovalov Win

It has been an up and down last couple seasons for rising German star Alexander Zverev, who has won the Tour Finals, been a Grand slam finalist, won Masters 1000s but also had several disappointing losses, and separated from two coaches in Ivan Lendl and David Ferrer, and seen other off court drama on the personal front.

With an 0-3 record at the ATP Cup in 2020, Zverev came into his opener looking for his first ever ATP Cup win and hoping to avenge his 2020 defeat to Denis Shapovalov, from Canada. It was a hard fought battle this time around.

The match remained even in the first set, with Shapovalov inching through in a tiebreak, with the Zverev serve coming to his rescue at times and letting him down at others. The German broke early in the second and served well to take the match to a decider.

An even keel final set followed; Zverev had his chances but did not make the most of them as the match headed to another breaker. At 3-4 in the tiebreak, Shapovalov felt the pressure on the serve and the German used his maturity beyond his years here to capitalize and close out the match.

An uphill task awaits Zverev now against Djokovic; but he has done it before on the biggest of stages, i.e the 2018 ATP Tour Finals title round in London.

Djokovic v Zverev Prediction and Tip

A crucial encounter between the top seeds from Serbia and Germany awaits us and both players looked in good touch against the Shapovalov challenge. But, in a must-win encounter with a semi-final berth on the line, it would not be wise to pick against the world number one.

Expect a well fought battle with the Serb to prevail in straight sets.

Tip: Djokovic to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
