Simona Halep v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

There have been two previous outings between Halep and Alexandrova with both players having won one apiece. Both matches came in 2019 and on the hard court surfaces of Cincinnati and Beijing. Halep needed a three-setter to win at the former while Alexandrova clinched the latter encounter in straight sets.

Halep Sizzling against Siegemund

There was very little Laura Siegemund could do in her third round clash with Halep, who looked like she had started from where she left off last season. On a day when most of the top players showed signs of the lack of tennis in the lead-up affecting them, Halep came away relatively unscathed.

Halep won 6-2, 6-4, and only for a brief period early in the second set did it look like her German opponent might make something of a contest out of it.

It turned out to be a case of false dawn as Halep, who was 0-2 down in the second set, broke right back and then again at 4-4 before serving out for the match.

Earlier, in the first set, Halep was quick off the blocks as she broke Siegemund twice in as many games, and had more chances to even go 5-0 up. In the end she wrapped up the set easily, following on from a 6-4, 6-4 win over Anastasia Potapova in the first round.

Alexandrova Inks Positive Result against Iga

Alexandrova was a clear second favourite, at 6/4, to win her third round match against the toast of the tennis world, Iga Swiatek. And then to do that, and in a mere hour and 16 minutes, and in straight sets was quite a treat.

Things went on serve over the first four games before the Russian got her first chance – more like three chances – to break and she grabbed the advantage. While Alexandrova was broken right back, she retaliated with a break of her own the very next game and carried home that advantage to win the opening set.

Confident and with Swiatek not playing at her best, Alexandrova broke her Polish opponent in the first game of the second set and then again in the seventh before serving it out to seal her quarterfinal berth.

The world number 33 was coming off a three-set win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in the previous round after having made it to the third round at the Abu Dhabi Open.

Halep v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

Given Halep’s form, it would require a giant effort from Alexandrova to push her and we reckon we can look at another straight-set win for the Romanian.

Tip: Halep to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
