David Goffin v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

These two have never faced off in a competitive ATP encounter before this but did face off in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in 2020. Goffin ran away to a 4-0 win over his opponent in that encounter.

Mixed Start to the Goffin Season

In the two tournaments Goffin has played so far this year, he has come up with contrasting results.

The Belgian started off his season with an appearance at the Antalya Open, and after losing the first set of his opening round match, he went on to win six sets in  row, spread across three matches. That included a victory over the talented Stefano Travaglia.

In the semifinal of that tournament though, Goffin fell to a three-set loss to the favourite and eventual winner Alex de Minaur.

With a positive result under his belt, Goffin then featured in the Great Ocean Road Open against Carlos Alcaraz, a player facing 9/4 odds to win it. And Goffin lost 6-3, 6-3 in that second round match – following an opening bye – to leave him with more questions than there were a few days ago.

That’s because Goffin had fought his way to the US Open fourth round last year but once he lost that match, he followed it up with four more opening round defeats. It is these inconsistencies that have meant his ATP title tally has remained stuck at four and he has never risen to his previous career-best ranking of seventh in the world.

Popyrin Hoping to Wipe off Underwhelming 2020

While Australia’s Popyrin didn’t have the best of starts to the previous season, he looked to have overcome his early nerves by reaching the third round at the Australian Open. The loss to Daniil Medvedev there was on expected lines but what followed, wasn’t.

In the entire, rest of the season, Popyrin didn’t win a single main draw match on the ATP circuit, and had to take the help of Challenger matches to try and get some rhythm and ranking points.

Which is why the start that he has had to this year, playing at the Murray River Open, would be bit of a relief. With two wins from as many matches, Popyrin made it to the third round of the tournament before he went down fighting to Grigor Dimitrov in that round of 16.

And now while he faces a tough opening challenge, there will be some amount of confidence under his belt for the 21-year-old tipped for the future.

Goffin v Popyrin Prediction and Tip

While Goffin is 1/4 to win this, we expect Popyrin to put up some fight and to claim at least one set.

Tip: Goffin to win AND Both player to win a set: 6/4 (bet365)
