Khachanov Brings Solid Form To Australian Open

2019 French Open quarterfinalist Karen Khachanov has found some rhythm going into the Australian Open.

The 24-year-old aggressive baseline player made it to the semifinals of the Great Ocean Road Open this week, before falling to Jannik Sinner in a nail-biting three-set affair.

The World No. 20 began the season with straight set wins over Australia’s Max Purcell and South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the first two rounds, before having to fight back from a set down to beat the Netherlands’ Botic Van de Zandschulp. In the semifinal on Saturday, Sinner edged out Khachanov 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in an engaging contest that lasted 3 hours and 8 minutes.

The 24-year-old Russian, who won three of his four career titles in 2018, which included the Paris Masters, finished last season with a 20-15 record.

His best showing at a Grand Slam came in 2019 when he reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, before losing to Dominic Thiem in straight sets. At the Australian Open, he will be making his fifth main draw appearance, having reached the second round in 2017 and 2018 and the third round in 2019 and 2020.

Last year, he exited the tournament after an exhausting five-set defeat to Nick Kyrgios.

Yet to lose a final on the Tour, Khachanov will be looking to improve on his past Australian Open performances this year.

Wild Card Vukic Will Have to Punch Above His Weight

Facing Khachanov in the first round will be Aussie wild card Aleksandar Vukic, who got his first ever main draw win on the Tour at the Great Ocean Road Open earlier this week.

The World No. 195 Vukic defeated Taiwan’s Yen-Tsun Lu in straight sets in the Round of 64 but faltered in the next hurdle, losing to Sinner.

The 24-year-old made his maiden main draw appearance at a Grand Slam at Roland Garros last year. He qualified for the first round by beating Carlos Alcaraz, Prajnesh Gunneswaran and Jason Jung in the three qualifying rounds before falling to Spain’s Pedro Martinez in the Round of 128.

Vukic has made two failed attempts to qualify for the main draw of his home slam, falling to Thiago Monteiro in the first round of qualification in 2019 and to Daniel Elahi Galan in the third round in 2020.

Khachanov v Vukic Prediction and Tip

Expect Khachanov to get off to a flying start with a three set win.

Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 8/15 (bet365)
