Auger-Aliassime Loses Another Final

It is one of those, “there is a good news, and there is a bad news” scenarios for Auger-Aliassime. Just 20 years of age, the talented Canadian has already made it to seven ATP finals in his short career. This includes two at the ATP 500 level and five other ATP 250s including one at the Murray River Open in the lead-up to the first day of the Australian Open.

The supposed bad news is Auger-Aliassime is yet to win a title. This latest final, against Britain’s Dan Evans should have been his first given most of the previous ones had come against some of the toughest opponents on the circuit.

As compared to Evans, the likes of Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Gael Monfils are all opponents who can cause issues but for Auger-Aliassime to then go down in straight sets to the Brit would hurt.

What’s also interesting to note is at the time of writing, Auger-Aliassime is scheduled to play his first round around 24 hours after that final, and following on from a run of five matches in a matter of less than a week. Can Auger-Aliassime regroup quickly enough and continue showing similar form?

Lucky Loser Stebe Hoping for Respite

30-year-old Stebe came into the new season on the back of a solid performance in the Parma Challenger, a title he went on to win. It was his first title victory since 2017, and would have come as a huge relief given how close he had gotten to winning at different times.

Earlier this season, Stebe kick-started his season at the Australian Open qualifiers with the 128th-ranked German crashing out in the final round to Viktor Troicki. Fortunately for him, Stebe has made it to the main draw as a lucky loser, in turn also featuring in the tune-up tournament in Melbourne.

He came through against Hugo Delien with ease in the first round but when faced against a player of decent quality, Kevin Anderson, he fell in straight sets too.

And now while Stebe will be up against a player probably exhausted by having played all week, he would have to contend with some high-quality tennis.

Auger-Aliassime v Stebe Prediction and Tip

Auger-Aliassime is a heavy favourite to win in straight sets here and while having played five matches in a week in the ATP Melbourne would pose bit of a question-mark, he should come through with ease.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win in straight sets: 4/6 (bet365)
