Frances Tiafoe v Stefano Travaglia Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the 23-year-old American and the 29-year-old Italian.

Tiafoe Will Be Worried About His Form

2019 Australian Open quarterfinalist, Frances Tiafoe comes into this year’s event with a dodgy form.

Beginning the 2021 season at Delray Beach, where he was a champion in 2018, Tiafoe defeated fellow Americans Donald Young and Bjorn Fratangelo in the first two rounds, but was dumped out of the ATP 250 event by Briton Cameron Norrie in the quarterfinal.

Tiafoe, who needed three sets to beat Fratangelo, was bageled by Norrie in the first set, before making a comeback in the second, only to see his challenge end in the third.

The American, next featured at the Murray River Open in Melbourne, where he squandered a one-set-to-love lead against France’s Corentin Moutet to go out of the first round.

At 20, Tiafoe captured his first ATP title (Delray Beach 2018) and at 21, he reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal, when he beat Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2019. His stunning run, in Melbourne, however, ended with a last eight defeat to Rafa Nadal in straight sets.

Among other significant Grand Slam results, Tiafoe reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open last year, before being tamed by Russian Daniil Medvedev in a one-sided contest.

Having finished 9-11 last year and having begun the new year with a 2-2 record, Tiafoe will be worried about his form going into the first round against the Italian who has hit good form in Melbourne.

Travaglia Reaches Maiden Final

It’s been a good start to the new season for Italy’s Stefano Travaglia. The gutsy Italian showed a lot of character as he staged comeback after comeback after comeback to reach his first ATP final at Grace Ocean Road Open in Melbourne. A title remained elusive though as he went down to fellow Italian Jannik Sinner 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 on Sunday.

Having begun the tournament with a come-from-behind three-set win over Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena in the first round, Travaglia repeated the pattern against 10th seed Sam Querrey in the next round, fighting back from a set down to advance.

He needed just two sets to dispatch eighth seed Alexander Bublik in the Round of 16 but had to dig deep once again in the quarterfinal, having to bounce back after losing the first set to third seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland. The tough quarterfinal was followed by a relatively easy semifinal as Travaglia didn’t need much of an effort to beat Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro.

The 29-year-old Italian is coming off a good 2020 season, which saw him reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career, as he beat Pablo Andujar and Kei Nishikori in the first two rounds of the French Open before going down to Nadal. He also reached the third round of a Masters 1000 event for the first time last year, when he won his first two rounds in Rome before going down to Matteo Berrettini.

Travaglia also featured in the Antalya Open earlier this year, winning his first two matches and reaching the quarterfinals before being beaten by David Goffin in straight sets.

Tiafoe v Travaglia Prediction and Tip

It will be interesting to see if Travaglia is tired after the exhausting Grace Ocean Road Open campaign. While Tiafoe has the experience of playing at the top on his side, form favours Travaglia and if the Italian is fit and raring to go on Monday, it will be little surprise to see him beat the American.

Tip: Travaglia to win: 11/5 (bet365)
