Benoit Paire v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

Paire and Gerasimov met on one occasion previously – at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow in 2018. Gerasimov won that second round match in straight sets.

More Pain For Paire? Possibly.

For Benoit Paire, the mildest of discomforts is enough for him to lose focus in a tennis match. And the unpredictable Frenchman has been through a rough patch in the last few months that he was never at the races at the ATP Cup for his country.

Paire’s woes began at last year’s US Open, in a coronavirus fiasco that created bedlam. On the eve of the tournament he tested positive and subsequently withdrew from the event. The ill effects caught up on him as he was beaten comprehensively on his return at the Rome Masters and he was unable to complete his match in Hamburg.

At the French Open he won his opening round match, and sadly that remains his sole victory coming to Melbourne. Paire’s life has been heavily disrupted, and just a few days after landing in Melbourne, he tweeted on his displeasure and wanted a route back home.

He was part of the French team at the ATP Cup that was eliminated at the group stages, with the 31-year-old playing a key role – for all the wrong reasons – in their downfall. Paire was beaten by Fabio Fognini in straight sets, and then failed to complete his match against Dominic Thiem due to breathing difficulties.

Gerasimov Now a Key Fixture In Grand Slams

After spending years of his professional career painstakingly building his ranking, Egor Gerasimov is finally reaping the rewards. Gerasimov is now firmly entrenched inside the top 100 of the ATP rankings, and the added incentive is that Grand Slam qualification is a gateway pass for him.

Since winning his first Grand Slam match at the US Open in 2019, he has been involved in each of the next coming Majors, with the exception of Wimbledon which was cancelled to due COVID-19.

With six career titles on the Challenger tour, Gerasimov has built a career spanning a decade and divides his time between the senior tour and the Challenger tour. He peaked at a career-high ranking of world no.65 after playing out a very productive first half of 2020, where he reached his first ATP final at the Maharashtra Open.

Unlike Paire, the Belarusian has competed at the Murray River Cup this season and reached the third round where he lost narrowly to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Paire v Gerasimov Prediction and Tip

Despite earning a seeding spot, Paire has done little to tip the odds in his favor. He hasn’t won a match since last year’s French Open and starts here as an overwhelming underdog. He struggled with breathing difficulties at ATP Cup. I would be shocked if this is even close.

Tip: Gerasimov to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
