Djokovic Sends Warning In Opener In Bid For Ninth Title

World number one Novak Djokovic arrives in Melbourne in search of an 18th Grand Slam and a ninth Australian Open title. If his opening match was anything to go by, he sent a sharp and clear message to all his opponents. The Serb dropped only six games in his opening match against French veteran Jerimy Chardy and looked clinical through the night.

2020 did not end in the best possible way for Djokovic with a routing in the French Open final against Rafa Nadal and less than satisfying results at both the Vienne ATP 500 and at the ATP Tour Finals in London by his standard.

Last week, although Serbia was unable to defend its ATP Cup title, Djokovic looked clinical in his wins against Denis Shapovalov and Alexander Zverev, and showed how his ability to win the big moments is as good as ever.

With the most number of weeks record soon to be his, the Serb will have his eyes on the title that takes him closer to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s title count. With a challenging draw, especially in the latter stages, Djokovic will look to continue his clinical ways through the first week

Can Tiafoe Put Up a Fight?

Twenty-three year old American Frances Tiafoe has been on the circuit for a few years now and while he has exhibited promise, has not managed to live up to his talent or display any consistency.

Once ranked in the top 30 in the world, he was the winner of the ATP 250 at Delray Beach in 2018. Currently ranked outside the top 50, Tiafoe is a former Australian Open quarter-finalist and will be looking to rekindle some of that form this fortnight.

Tiafoe looked in good touch against Italian Stefano Travaglia in the first round, who was probably feeling some of the fatigue from the ATP 250 ending on Sunday where he was a runner-up to countryman Jannik Sinner. After a close first set, the American looked in good touch and had a routine straight sets win after, closing the last two sets 6-2,6-2 after an opening set tiebreak.

The American has not had a good run except the round of sixteen at the 2020 US Open since the start of the pandemic and will look to better that here, but the opponent in his next round is as uphill as it gets.

Djokovic v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe has all the talent to challenge the world number one; but he does not seem to have the belief. Expect a straight sets Djokovic victory.

Tip: Djokovic  to win in straight sets: 1/4 bet365)
