Carreno Busta Holds Off Nishikori

Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta avenged his 2019 Round-of-16 defeat to Japan’s Kei Nishikori on Monday, as the 16th seed defeated the former World No. 4 in the first round of the Australian Open.

Carreno Busta served 12 aces and struck 39 winners on his way to a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory. The match that lasted 2 hours and 23 minutes saw the Spaniard convert 6 of 11 break points opportunities. The Japanese, too, created 11 break point chances but could capitalize on only three of those.

Nishikori, who hit 36 winners in the match had 42 unforced errors compared to Carreno Busta’s 39.

The 29-year-old Spaniard, who had a major emotional meltdown at the Australian Open two years ago when he went down to Nishikori in a dramatic five-set contest, looked in good touch as he won key moments to overpower the former U.S. Open runner-up.

A four-time champion on the Tour, Carreno Busta came into the tournament with a 2-1 record at the ATP Cup. He also had a solid 20-12 2020 season, which also saw him reach the semifinals of the U.S. Open for the second time in his career.

Vesely Outlasts Qualifier

Facing Carreno Busta in the next round will be Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely, who needed three hours and 28 minutes to dispatch Belgian qualifier Kimmer Coppejans in the first round on Monday.

Fresh from a quarterfinal appearance at the Murray River Open, Vesely started off well by taking the first set but squandered that advantage as he allowed the Belgian to take the next two and go ahead. But the 6’6” lefty wasn’t ready to surrender as he fought his way back into the contest, to win 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-3.

The Czech served out 22 aces against his partner’s 18 and converted 6 of 13 break points while saving 6 of 9.

The 27-year-old, who won the Maharashtra Open last year to claim his second ATP title, is into the second round of the Australian Open for the second time in his career.

Carreno Busta v Vesely Prediction and Tip

Having beaten a tough competitor in Nishikori, Carreno Busta will be high on confidence. Expect him to roll past Vesely in straight sets.

Tip: Carreno Busta to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
