Lorenzo Sonego v Feliciano Lopez Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first meeting between the 25 year-old Italian, and the Spaniard who is 14 years older.

Sonego Impressive in Win over Querry

By reaching the second round, Sonego has already equalled his best at this event. And he got there in style with an impressive first-round victory over the big-serving American Sam Querry. The Italian actually served more aces than his opponent, and was far more efficient in converting break points, although Querry did not help his own cause with 31 unforced errors.

The first set was dominated by serve, but Query was the first to blink, and give Sonego a chance to break. He converted his second opportunity and closed out the set.

The American’s serve was once more under pressure at the start of the second set and, although he saved three break points in the opening game, the reprieve was temporary as Sonego broke him next time round. The Italian controlled the set from there.

The third set was more competitive and, for the first time, the Italian was made to work to hold his own serve. However, he continued to threaten the American on his own serve at every opportunity, and, in the end, forced another break. He went on to seal victory with his first match point.

Experienced Lopez Given Stiff Test by Wildcard

Lopez reached the quarter-finals here in 2015,  and has reached the fourth-round in Melbourne on a further four occasions in his long career, but was given a tough test by the Australian wildcard Li Tu in the first round.

The first set was dominated by serve and, with no breaks on offer, went to a tie-break. Lopez then made the first mistake and Tu was able to capitalise to take a surprise lead.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but, this time, it was Lopez who was able to force another break to level the match.

Serve once again dominate the third set, and with no openings on either side, it went to yet another tie-break. This time Lopez won the first point of the breaker against serve and held on to take the lead in the match.

Still, he could not shake off Tu, who broke him in the opening game of the fourth set. Fortunately for the Spaniard he broke straight back, and then was able to break once more to finally clinch the win.

However, a match that lasted almost three hours was not something his 39-year old legs needed.

Sonego v Lopez Prediction and Tip

Sonego has the advantage of youth over Lopez, who had to battle through his first round in a match that may have taken a lot out of him. Sonego impressed in his win over Querrey and should make the third round in Melbourne for the first time.

Tip: Sonego to win in three sets: 6/5 (bet365)
