Anett Kontaveit v Heather Watson Head to Head

The Estonian has a slender 3-2 lead over Watson.

The Briton won the first contest at the French Open in 2014, while Kontaveit won their latest meeting at Wimbledon in 2019. None of their previous five matches has needed a third set.

Kontaveit Off to A Good Start

Last year’s Australian Open quarterfinalist Annet Kontaveit got off to a good start on Tuesday, as she needed just 69 minutes to beat Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich 7-5, 6-2 in the first round.

Ranked No. 22 in the world, the Estonian broke her opponent five times in the match, struck 14 winners and made just 10 unforced errors to extend her streak in Melbourne to four wins this year.

Last week, playing at the Grampians Trophy, Kontaveit got into the groove to reach the final, but since time ran out to hold a final for the Australian Open warm up event, she shared the trophy with Ann Li.

The 25-year-old right-hander, who began last week’s event with straight-set wins over Americans Christina McHale and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, got a walkover in the quarterfinal after Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament, and then played out a tough three-set semifinal before holding off Greece’s Maria Sakkari.

Last year in Melbourne, Kontaveit reached her maiden quarterfinal at a major by beating Astra Sharma, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Belinda Bencic and Iga Swiatek in the first four rounds. Simona Halep ended her run with a straight sets win in the last eight.

Watson Edges Krystina Pliskova

Kontaveit’s second round opponent, Heather Watson, had to endure two tiebreaks before seeing off Czech Republic’s Krystina Pliskova in the first round on Tuesday.

A former British No. 1, who reached a career-high ranking of 38, Watson hit 37 winners and made just 25 unforced errors to win the one-hour-and-47-minute contest 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3).

A winner of four WTA titles, Watson has never gone past the third round of a major. In Melbourne, she has struggled to win two matches in a row, having done that only once, back in 2013.

She defeated Krystina Pliskova in the first round last year as well, but faltered in the next round against Elise Mertens.

Watson, who won one and lost one to start the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi, was defeated in the first round of the Grampians trophy last week.

Kontaveit v Watson Prediction and Tip

Kontaveit is on a roll right now and should be able to advance without much trouble.

Tip: Kontaveit to win in straight sets: 4/7 (bet365)
