Rublev 2020 Form Continues Into the Season Down Under

Andrey Rublev had a phenomenal 2020 winning five tournaments  (more than anyone on the tour) on hard courts, clay and indoors.  His first appearance at the year end Tour Finals did not go as well as he hoped, where although he defeated Dominic Thiem he registered two losses and did not go beyond the group stages.

The Russian carried his form into this year, representing his country at the ATP Cup, and along with Daniil Medvedev, led Russia to the title. It was a fantastic run for Rublev at the tournament, where he won all his matches.  Coming into the Australian Open, Rublev was off to a slow start against German Yannick Hanfmann, but before too long he was in his element and coasting to a straight sets win.

Rublev is scheduled to meet fellow in-form Russian Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals, and with David Goffin and Roberto Bautista Agut out of the tournament, that quarter of the draw is open and that clash looks increasingly likely now.

Brazilian Monteiro Off To Good Start To Season

26-year old Brazilian Thiago Monteiro has been on the tour for the second half of the last decade. With a strong baseline game and a topspin left handed forehand, he has idolized his game on Rafael Nadal. Monteiro had a good run at the ATP Challenger and ITF Futures, but not yet met with success on the main ATP Tour, with his ranking hovering around the top 80 in the world.

2021 is off to a positive start for the Brazilian, with a round of 16 at the Delray Beach Open and a semi-final appearance last week at the ATP 250 here in Melbourne. Monteiro was stretched in his opening set against Slovak Andrej Martin winning a tight tie-break but then prevailed convincingly for a straight sets win.

Despite adjusting well to the faster surfaces here in Australia, Monteiro will know that he will need to increase his level significantly to have any chance against a striking hot Andrey Rublev

Rublev v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

The Brazilian has looked in good form and confident thus far this season, but he is up against an ominous Rublev. Monteiro can capitalize on Rublev’s often slow start, but it will only be a matter of time before the Russian is in flow. Expect a straight sets win for Rublev.

Tip: Rublev  to win in straight sets: 1/3 bet365)
