Dominic Thiem v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

The players have met once, on the clay in Nice in 2015, where Kyrgios retired trailing 3-4 in the first set

After Slow Start To Season, Thiem Hitting Good Form

Dominic Thiem came into 2021 with the monkey off his back as far as winning his first ever major, but with the added expectations of being one who is going to add to his title count and an actual equal with the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

It was a disappointing start for the Austrian who looked woefully out of touch in his ATP Cup opener against Matteo Berrettini and the rusty run seemed to continue into his opener against Mikhail Kukushkin in the first round as well. Saving set points in the first set, Thiem was able to clinch it in the tiebreak, but then looked to be back to his routine self gradually with convincing play in the next two sets.

In his second round encounter against German Dominik Koepfer, the Austrian seemed a little shaky starting off and facing break points, but once he held on for 3-3, there was no looking back, as he looked in prime form wrapping up the first set 6-4 and then only dropped two games all match, prevailing 6-0,6-2 in the last two sets with great groundstrokes and setting himself up for a likely deep run here over the next week and a half.

Despite Long Layoff, Kyrgios Coming Off Sensational Win

Nick Kyrgios continues to defy expectations with magical runs and comebacks, low on match practice, physical fitness and despite looking down and out. It was another spectacular night for the Aussie at Melbourne Park against Frenchman Ugo Humbert, after a straight sets first round win two days back for Kyrgios.

Having not played competitive tennis for about a year, Kyrgios knew the challenge against rising Frenchman Humbert would not be an easy one and when he was down two sets to one, the home favorite looked down and out. But, there is always another level that Kyrgios takes it to at Melbourne Park and so he did.

Humbert had match point in the fourth set, but Kyrgios saved that, broke back and then won the set in a tiebreak. Into the fifth, although the Frenchman did not wilt, the Aussie fed off the crowd’s energy, broke early in the fifth and closed the match 6-4 for another unbelievable win at the John Cain arena, setting up a mouth watering third round clash with Dominic Thiem.

Thiem v Kyrgios Prediction and Tip

This promises to be a high voltage clash and although Thiem is the more disciplined and established player, Kyrgios in Melbourne is always a factor. An enthralling contest on the cards ahead; it remains to be seen how much is left in the Kyrgios tank, low on match practice after the physical battle of the last round. The Austrian to prevail in four sets.

Tip: Thiem to win in four sets: 4/11 (bet365)
