Anett Kontaveit v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

There have been two previous matches played between these players with Kontaveit having won both of them. The first came at the Auckland Open qualifiers in 2014 while this was followed by the 2019 Wimbledon where they met in the first round.

Kontaveit Comes Away Fighting against Watson

She was 1/5 to win her second round match against Britain’s Heather Watson and up 4-2 in the first set, it seemed like Kontaveit had read the script right.

The Estonian dropped her serve in the very next game, got no more break-points in the opening set and in a major choke, lost five points in a row in the tie-breaker to lose the set.

The second set didn’t look like it was headed her way either when the pair exchanged breaks but once Kontaveit had got herself a decisive break in the ninth game, there was no looking back for her; the world number 22 won the set and got herself two more breaks of serve in the third to win the encounter.

Battle-hardened after a straight-set win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich, Kontaveit will hope to continue her winning streak which has already seen her go without defeat across five successive matches. These include three at the Grampians Trophy before the tournament was called off and two here.

Can she push on for a number six to get one step closer to emulating her best ever showing at the Australian Open last when she had made the quarterfinals?

Rogers Continues to Deliver

An easy first round win over Francesca Jones was followed by another straight-set victory in the second round for Rogers, who has now won five matches this season to her one defeat – which came at the hands of Ash Barty.

Rogers demolished Olga Danilovic in straight sets and an hour and 13 minutes to carve out a place in the third round, her best ever performance at the Australian Open.

In a dominating performance from the word go, Rogers broke her opponent twice in a row to take a 3-0 lead and while she dropped her serve once thereafter it was enough to wrap up the set quickly after that.

The second set started off slightly tighter when it went on serve over the first six games, despite Rogers getting a few opportunities to break her opponent. However, once she broke Danilovic in the seventh game, there was no looking back as the American who sealed the match with another break of serve

She could prove to be a serious thorn in her seeded opponent’s flesh.

Kontaveit v Rogers Prediction and Tip

This has all the makings of a hard-fought match and we could well be looking at a three-setter here.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
