Lloyd Harris v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23-year-old South African, and the American, who is two years older.

Harris Battles Through Against Local Man

Harris has exceeded his previous best in a Grand Slam now, having twice reached the second round in Paris, and once in New York.

He has got there the hard way, needing to come from behind to see off the Danish qualifier Mikael Topegaard in the first round, and then surviving a five set battle with local man Alexei Popyrin in the second.

Harris started well and broke Popyrin twice to take the first set for the loss of just two games. But then the pendulum swung the other way in the second, and this time he was the one to drop his serve twice, allowing the Australian to level.

Harris regained control in the third , broke the Australian once, and served out from there.

The fourth set, though, saw serve dominate, and not a break point was earned on either side of the net, resulting in a tie-break which Popyrin won.

In the end the match came down to the sixth game of the final set. Harris forced three break points, Popyrin saved them all, but Harris finally succeeded at his fourth attempt. The South African was able to close out from that point.

McDonald a Shock Victor over Coric

Australia is fast turning into McDonald’s favourite Grand Slam. He has twice made the second round here, and now he is into the third round for the first time, at his fourth attempt. And he has done it in style, with two good wins over higher ranked opponents.

He began with a victory over Marco Cecchinato, the world number 82, coming from a set down to beat the Italian. That pitted him against the world 25 and number 22 seed, Borna Coric of Croatia, who was a US Open quarter-finalist last September.

McDonald began well, forcing three break points in the fifth game, and converting the third. He served out from there. Two more breaks put him firmly in control of the second set, and after he survived a break point against his own serve, he ran into a two-set lead.

Coric twice saved points against his own serve in the third set but, when he finally forced one against the American, he pounced to reduce the deficit.

However, the Croatian then dropped his serve again in the fourth set, missed chances  to break back in the next game, and from there, McDonald was able to calmly control the rest of the match.

Harris v McDonald Prediction and Tip

Harris will start the favourite for this match by dint of his higher world ranking, and the fact he plays more regularly on the ATP Tour. A rare fourth round at a Grand Slam awaits the winner.

Tip: Harris to win: 8/11 (bet365)
