Stefanos Tsitsipas v Mikael Ymer Head to Head

There has been one previous match played between Tsitsipas and Ymer with the Greek winning that 2020 Marseille pre-quarterfinal round in straight sets.

Tsitsipas in a Gruelling Second Round Match

He was expected to come through easily in his second round but not only was Tsitsipas made to work hard in that encounter by Thanasi Kokkinakis, he almost faced a possibility of a defeat with the home fans cheering his opposition on throughout.

In the end, four hours and 36 minutes later, it was Tsitsipas who held his nerves but only just and carved out a win over an inexperienced, an injury-prone but a never-say-die Aussie, who was egged on by, among others, Nick Kyrgios in the stands.

Where Tsitsipas scored over his opponent was his ability to hold serve – the world number six afforded just three break-points and his opponent didn’t win a single one of them.

That win came on the back of a slightly more straightforward first round victory against Gilles Simon in which Tsitsipas dropped just four games. With a couple of wins in the ATP Cup to go with this, the Greek is now 4-0 on win-loss this season and faces a 95th-ranked player for a place in the fourth round.

Ymer Stretched Both Times But Comes Through

Sweden’s Ymer hasn’t had the most brilliant start to his ATP career but a third round place here at the Australian Open – his best in a Grand Slam – will go a long way in establishing some confidence for this 22-year-old.

Ymer, who started off the season with a first round defeat at the hands of Adrian Mannarino at the Murray River Open, has now dispatched away Hubert Hurkacz and Carlos Alcaraz in successive rounds despite having started off as a second-favourite in both those matches.

More interestingly, Ymer is coming off a poor previous season, with none of his four main draw wins on the ATP circuit coming in the post-pandemic-break competitions – he failed to qualify for three of the five competitions he attempted as well.

Can he prove to be a thorn in Tsitsipas’ flesh?

Tsitsipas v Ymer Prediction and Tip

The Greek starts off at 1/25 to win this, such an overwhelming favourite he is here but the bigger question is whether he can win it in straight sets – 2/5. We think this might not last more than three sets.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 2/5 (bet365)
