De Minaur Equals Best Showing At Australian Open

Alex De Minaur missed last year’s Australian Open, but his performances in two matches here so far, have more than made up for that absence. He has equaled his career-best showing at his home Slam, after securing his second straight-sets win under his belt.

De Minaur dismissed Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-3 6-3 7-5 in exactly two hours, with the gulf in rankings and age coming to the fore. De Minaur, who is 14 years younger, and with fresher legs, looked different class. He won 86% of first serve points, and translated the same figure on net points too.

The Aussie youngster delighted the home faithful with relentless hitting and superior court speed. His serve is not the biggest, but he makes up for it with some searing pace. He only gave up one break on serve in the whole match, with his fastest serve going above the 200 kmh mark.

After a title win in Antalya in the opening month of the year, his season could not have started in better fashion. Now, with an opportunity for spot in the fourth round on the line, the 21-year-old could be forgiven for dreaming big.

Fognini Outlasts Countryman Caruso

A Fabio Fognini match devoid of any drama is so rare. Even in victory, you can always trust the bubble to burst right in front of him, when he is the man puncturing it.

So the second round of his match followed that script. It was an unusual scene as Fognini and Salvatore Caruso were entangled in a heated war of words after the match. The two Italians had  played out a thrilling five setter at the John Cain Arena. Fognini overcame a 1-4 deficit and saved a match point, before prevailing 14-12 in the final set tiebreak.

The incredible row should not in any way take the gloss of this high quality match which Fabio Fognini played catch up for most of the evening. He trailed two set to one, and was on the backfoot in the final tiebreak. But in the clutch moments he produced some jaw-dropping shots, including one outrageous passing shot at 12-12 to set up match point.

The reward for the world no.17 is a place in the third round. Only three times in his last 14 visits has he made the second week of the Australian Open, and he will have to defy the odds this time to do make it four.

De Minaur v Fognini Prediction and Tip

Fognini has plotted his downfall in this one. Coming up against the agile De Minaur on the back off a five-set marathon is not the most ideal preparation. But the Italian has made a career of fighting back when the odds are stacked against him. He could make this competitive, but the Australian’s athleticism should see him home.
