Serena Williams v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head

It is rather surprising that the world number seven Sabalenka has never played the 11th-ranked and 23-time major winner Serena before this.

Serena 6-0 After Potapova

For a while it looked like Serena might be tested. For a while it also seemed like we could see an upset.

And then it turned into business as usual, partly because of Serena’s legend and partly because of Potapova’s inexperience as she choked at vital times during the first set.

Serena dropped serve in the sixth game of the first set, won back that break but was then broken yet again to have her opponent serving for the set at 5-3. She had two set-points too but nerves got the better of her as she served double-faults to get broken.

The set went into a tie-breaker in which Potapova took a 5-3 lead again only to squander the next four points to lose the set. And the morale, some might add as Serena broke her twice in the second set to complete the win.

Earlier Serena hadn’t wasted any time in overcoming Laura Siegemund and Nina Stojanovic in the first two round of this competition, also in straight sets to make it in six wins in a row this season.

Sabalenka Demolishes Ann Li

More and more one sees of Sabalenka this season, the more one reckons that loss in the first round of the Australian Open tuneup tournament in Melbourne, a defeat to the experienced by unheralded Kaia Kanepi, was totally against the run of play.

Because that loss came on the heels of a 15-run winning streak for Sabalenka, consisting of three title wins, and has been followed by three clinical performances after that. At this first major of the season, Sabalenka has thrown her name in the hat of possible contenders with a 6-3, 6-1 demolition job of American Ann Li.

Li, a world number 69 had earlier made it to the semifinals at the Grampians Trophy with wins over Veronika Kudermetova and Sorana Cirstea, then spared neither Shuai Zhang nor Alize Cornet in the first two rounds here, winning both matches in straight sets.

So there was that chance of Li testing out Sabalenka but that’s not quite how it turned out. Sabalenka needed just an hour and a minute to come through against Li, breaking her twice without a return in both sets.

Sabalenka had earlier crushed the hopes of Victoria Kuzmova and Daria Kasatkina in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Serena v Sabalenka Prediction and Tip

This one could be for the ages and while Serena will start off a favourite, we think Sabalenka has the game to get past the champion.

Tip: Sabalenka to win a set: 4/7 (bet365)
