Andrey Rublev v Casper Ruud Head to Head

Rublev leads 2-0 head to head, having won on the clay court of Hamburg in a three-set Round-of-16 clash in 2019 and following that with another win in the same tournament the next year, this time winning the semifinal contest in straight sets.

Rublev Stays On a Roll

World No. 8 Andrey Rublev continued his unblemished run at the Australian Open, as he eased into the fourth round with a straight sets win over Spain’s Feliciano Lopez on Saturday.

Yet to lose a set in the tournament, the 23-year-old Russian improved to 7-0 this year, with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 win over the 39-year-old lefty, featuring in a 75th consecutive major. In what was another disciplined performance, Rublev won 93 percent of his first serve points and converted four of nine break points while saving all three that he faced.

The Russian also hit 33 winners and made just 23 unforced errors to win the contest in an hour and 32 minutes.

Beginning the year with a successful ATP Cup campaign, where he won four singles matches in a row to help his country win their maiden title, Rublev has barely been troubled this week. He started his fifth Australian Open challenge with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 win over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann and then defeated Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8) in the next round.

Coming off a highly successful 2020 season (41-10 record), where he won five titles to add to his previous two, Rublev has been broken just once in the tournament this week.

He will be looking to continue this form in Melbourne as he aims for a maiden spot in the last eight of the tournament, having exited from the Round-of-16 last year.

Previously, he has reached the quarterfinal of the French Open last year and the U.S. Open in 2017 and 2020.

Ruud, Walking on Father’s Footsteps

Walking on his father’s footsteps, Casper Ruud became only the second Norwegian in history to reach the fourth round of major after he defeated resurgent Moldovan Radu Albot in just under three hours on Saturday.

The Norwegian, who lost in the Round of 32 at the French Open in 2019 and 2020 and at the U.S. Open in 2020, advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in a major with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Casper’s father Christian had reached this far at the Australian Open in 1997.

The first Norwegian to win an ATP title and to reach the semifinal of an ATP Masters 1000 event, Casper Ruud struck 45 winners to Albot’s 33 and won 86 percent of his first serve points.

The Norwegian created 12 break point opportunities in the match, converting five of them, while saving three of the five he faced.

Ruud, who defeated Jordan Thompson in the first round after the Aussie pulled out with a neck injury while trailing 6-3, 6-3, 2-1, won his second round against American Tommy Paul on Thursday.

Broken twice by Paul in the first set, the 22-year-old made a remarkable recovery to score a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, 7-5 victory in two hours and 43 minutes.

A clay court specialist, Ruud was 0-1 this season before the start of the first major of the year. He is coming off a successful 2020 season, winning his first ATP title in Buenos Aires and reaching the final in Santiago.

Later, he also reached a maiden Masters 1000 semifinal at the Italian Open, by defeating No. 8 Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinal.

Rublev v Ruud Prediction and Tip

It could end up being a closer contest than what Rublev typically faces but he should still still go through in at the most four sets.

Tip: Ruud to win a set – Yes: 11/10 (bet365)
