Bianca Andreescu v Madison Brengle Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the World No. 9 Canadian and the American, ranked 85th in the world.

Andreescu Struggles in the First Major

2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada struggled on her return to tennis after more than a year’s absence due to injury and the pandemic.

Andreescu, who became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title when she beat Serena Williams to lift the trophy at Flushing Meadows two years ago, lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Hsieh Su-Wei this week.

Returning to court after a gap of 15 months, Andreescu had to dig deep against Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu before overcoming the World No. 138 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Melbourne major.

Her campaign, however, ended in the next round, after the veteran Taiwanese outplayed her in straight sets.

The 20-year-old Canadian, who began the 2019 season outside of the top 100, touched great heights that year to soar to her best ever ranking of No. 4. The right-hander became the first Canadian in 50 years to win the Canadian Open title, when she beat Serena Williams in the final and then beat Williams again to become the first player ever to win the U.S. Open on main draw debut.

Having missed out a complete year due to knee injury and the pandemic, Andreescu will be hoping to get back to winning ways quickly and will be aiming to recapture her form in the Phillip Island Trophy, where she begins her campaign on Monday in the second round after being handed a first round bye.

Brengle Beats Wang in Opener

Facing Andreescu in the Round of 32 will be American Madison Brengle, who defeated China’s Wang Yafan 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the competition on Saturday.

The American converted 5 of 15 break points while saving 2 of 5 to win the contest in an hour and 34 minutes.

A former World No. 35, Brengle lost to Jennifer Brady in the second round of the Australian Open this week. Having begun with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win over Australia’s Arina Rodionova, Brengle was outclassed by the 22nd seed American by the same scoreline in the next round.

A winner of one WTA 125K title and 15 ITF titles, Brengle made it to the third round of the U.S. Open last year. She will sense an opportunity against the rusty Andreescu on Monday.

Andreescu v Brengle Prediction and Tip

Had it been 2019, Andreescu would have started as a heavy favourite. But she is still searching for that form having just played twice since her return after 15 months. Although the Canadian should still win this, she will have to sweat it out against the American.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
