Collins Storms Into Semis

World No. 40 Danielle Collins breezed past Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in the quarterfinals of the Phillip Island Open on Wednesday.

The 2019 Australian Open semifinalist and last year’s French Open quarterfinalist, Collins put up a dominant performance as she beat the 16th seed 6-1, 6-2.

Not broken once in the match, the 27-year-old American saved as many as 10 break points while converting 4 of 6 to improve to 7-2 this year.

Knocked out by Karolina Pliskova in the second round of the Australian Open, Collins began her Phillip Island campaign with a tough three set victory over American Varvara Lepchenko in the Round of 32 after being given a first round bye.

In the Round of 16, Collins defeated Japan’s Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-2 before scoring another convincing victory over Peterson on Wednesday.

Collins, who has one WTA 125K title, reached a career-high ranking of 23 in 2019. She began her 2021 season at the Yarra Valley Classic, reaching the last eight before going down to Serena Williams.

Kasatkina Overwhelms Martic

World No. 75 Daria Kasatkina outplayed fourth seed Petra Martic in a quarterfinal on Wednesday. The former World No. 10 didn’t look in any trouble as she bagelled the Croatian in the first set on her way to a 6-0, 6-4 victory.

The 23-year-old converted 5 of 12 break points and won a total of 65 points to improve to 9-3 this year.

Beginning the tournament with a straight sets win over Britain’s Katie Boulter, Kasatkina defeated compatriots Varvara Gracheva and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next two rounds, before scoring a comprehensive win over Martic in the last eight.

She has dropped just one set in the tournament so far, losing the first set to seventh seed Pavlyuchenkova before rallying to win the Round-of-16 contest 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Kasatkina, who lost in the second round of the Australian Open to Aryna Sabalenka, began her season in Abu Dhabi where she reached the Round of 16. She also reached the third round of the Gippsland Trophy in the lead-up to the first major of the year.

A two-time winner on the tour and three-time finalist, Kasatkina was 9-11 last year. She delivered her best results on the Tour in 2018 when she won her first Kremlin Cup title, reached the final at Indian Wells and Dubai and played in the semifinals in St. Petersburg. She also featured in five other quarterfinals in what turned out to be a breakthrough year for her.
