Daniil Medvedev v Stefanos Tsitsipas Head to Head

This will be the seventh meeting between the players, with Medvedev leading the head-to-head 5-1.

Tsitsipas’ only win came in their last encounter at the 2019 ATP Tour Finals in the round robin stages. Tsitsipas went on to win the title that year.

Medvedev Looking at 20 Consecutive Wins

Medvedev ended 2020 on a strong note with victories at the Paris Masters and the ATP Tour Finals In London. This was followed by an unbeaten run earlier this month at the ATP Cup.

The Russian cruised through his first two rounds here before he hit a hurdle against Serbian Filip Krajinovic where a two sets to love lead ended up in a decider. However, the Russian hit prime form and closed the final set 6-0.  Going into his fourth round against Mackenzie McDonald, the Russian would  have been wary of avoiding a similar setback after a strong start, but ensured none of that occurred with a clinical straight sets win.

Going into the quarterfinals with a 3-0 head-to-head against childhood friend Andrey Rublev, Medvedev believed the challenge would be sterner this time and so it was at the start.

Rublev had his chances at 5-5 in the first set, but did not capitalize and Medvedev closed the set 7-5. In the second, when Rublev saved break points at 2-3, Medvedev looked flustered and was down three break points himself, but saved them all and there was no looking back after that.

Medvedev got more clinical as the match wore on, and Rublev was surprisingly showing signs of tiring in the Melbourne summer heat as the world number four wrapped up the second set 6-3 and took off to a 4-0 lead in the third.

Rublev held on to his service games thereafter, but a 6-2 win for Medvedev followed as he moved to the number three ranking in the world and into his first Australian Open semi-final.

Tsitsipas On High After Nadal Win; But More Energy Left?

Tsitsipas let the tennis world know of his arrival on the big stage with a semi-final run including a win against Roger Federer in the fourth round here in Melbourne in 2019. While Tsitsipas has lived up to his billing since and been a regular member of the top eight rankings on the ATP tour, he has lacked in consistency and been unable to win the crucial points, games and matches.

The Greek was in good touch at the ATP Cup and though Greece did not go beyond the group stages, Tsitsipas looked convincing in his straight set wins and carried the form into the Australian Open.

After a clinical first round win, the Greek was pushed to five sets by local hero Thomas Kokkinakis, but it was smooth sailing for Tsitsipas till the quarter-finals thereafter with a straight sets win over Mikael Ymer and in-form Italian Matteo Berrettini pulling out with an abdominal strain.

Tsitsipas was up against world number two Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals and with a 1-6 head-to-head looked headed for another loss with Nadal winning the first two sets clinically in 80 minutes.

In a final set tiebreak, a missed Nadal overhead turned the tide somewhat and Tsitsipas capitulated to win the set 7-4 in the tiebreak. The level from the Greek was of the highest level thereafter, winning the fourth set 6-4 and going into a decider, Nadal’s energy levels definitely looked to have dropped.

Errors in the 11th game from Nadal gave Tsitsipas the break, who then had a nervous service game trying to close out the match. Nadal saved two match points and had a break point himself. but the fifth seed maintained great composure to close out the match, and make a second semi-final here in Melbourne.

Medvedev v Tsitsipas Prediction and Tip

It has been a good run for both players this fortnight, with Medvedev carrying forward his 2020 year-end form and Tsitsipas showing atypical mental strength. Although Medvedev leads the head-to-head 5-1, Tsitsipas will have belief from his win over Nadal, but it remains to be seen how much is left in the tank.

Expect a good contest, but Medvedev is playing grand slam winning tennis right now and will notch up a 20th consecutive win, in four sets.

Tip: Medvedev to win in four sets: 3/1 (bet365)
