Sonego Hoping to Improve Hard Court Record

Sonego had featured in Cordoba last year, a tournament played on his favourite clay court surface. The Cordoba Open will run in parallel with this tournament in Montpellier but due to a variety of reasons, Sonego has opted to participate in this competitions on indoor hard courts as opposed on the clays of Cordoba.

One of the reasons could also be his showing at the Vienna Open late last season which was also played indoors, where starting out in the qualifying rounds, the Italian lost in the second qualifier only to make it to the main draw as a lucky loser.

And from there on, Sonego went on to have the time of his life, and played the tournament of his career, to defeat Novak Djokovic and co. to make it to the final. While he didn’t win the title, going down to Andrey Rublev in the final, there was enough flair on show all competition from the 25-year-old for him to seriously consider non-clay competitions as well.

Sonego hasn’t had the best of starts to the season though, losing in the first round of the Murray River Open in Melbourne before bowing out in the second at the Australian Open.

Gaston Yet to Win a Main Draw Match

The 20-year-old Gaston was ousted in the first round of the qualifiers for the Australian Open which meant he didn’t travel to Melbourne to play any of the lead-up competitions either. As such he hasn’t played in any tour level match, in short implying he hasn’t won a single main draw encounter.

Gaston did participate in the two Challenger tournaments played in Quimper and was knocked out in the first round at both.

And while he did make it to the semifinal at the Cherbourg Challenger, giving him some confidence, he will know his work will be cut out going up against a player of Sonego’s classh.

Sonego v Gaston Prediction and Tip

What’s interesting to note is that while Sonego is a favourite, he still starts out a 2/5 to win this and those sounds very tempting odds despite the Italian’s obvious preference for clay.

Tip: Sonego to win: 2/5 (bet365)
