After dishing out a solid performance at the Great Ocean Road Open, the competition played as a tune-up to the Australian Open, Monteiro has climbed up to 74th in the rankings, his best ever. He reached the semifinal in that tournament, which for a clay court specialist like him is a marked improvement.
Contextually that was the best start that Monteiro has ever had to the season given his winning streaks would typically begin only once the clay court swing started.
With that kind of confidence under his belt, Monteiro will now hope to build on the same on his favourite surface. And after he was sent packing in the first round of the Cordoba Open last year, this will not be an opportunity for the Brazilian to turn things around here but also one to gain further in ranking points.

Menezes Makes it Through as Lucky Loser
This will be the first main draw match Menezes plays at the ATP level this season. And it comes after he lost in the final round of the qualifiers but still came through as the only lucky loser in the competition.
This follows on from his failure to qualify for the Australian Open, and three back to back opening round defeats at the Antalya (X2) and Concepcion Challenger competitions he featured in. The only time he actually won a match was on the indoor hard courts of the Istanbul Challenger, also as a qualifier but was the ousted in the second.
Menezes had similar form struggles last season as well, but it must be quickly added here he was making a switch from the Futures circuit to attempting at becoming a regular on the Challenger circuit.
The 24-year-old has never seen the inside of the top 170 on the ATP rankings and by the looks of things, he will need to wait a little more given his opponent comes into this with some good form.
