Thiago Monteiro v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head

Monteiro has a perfect winning record against the Spanish baseliner, winning all four meetings in the past. Remarkably, all of those matches were played on clay. Three of the meetings were contested on the Challenger circuit, with the lone tour-level match coming in Santiago last year.

Monteiro Sees Off Menezes

Thiago Monteiro’s intelligent shot-making and experience was too much to handle for the 24-year-old countryman Joao Menezes. His experience at this level was telling, as he broke Menezes’ serve four times, twice in each set.

Monteiro also won twice the number of receiving points (24 to 12), and never looked remotely close to surrender his lead at any point in the match. He shaded the serving numbers too, winning 25 out of 33 first serve points. Menezes who arrived at this stage courtesy of a lucky loser entry, has only won one main draw match this season (Istanbul Challenger).

The left-handed Monteiro is looking to build on a very promising start to his 2021 season, after recording some landmark achievements already.

Monteiro won a match at the Australian Open on his third attempt this month when he beat Andrej Martin. It was a result that was preceded by a semifinal showing at the Great Ocean Road Open, beating seasoned hard-courters like Matthew Ebden and Jordan Thompson.

Having cemented his place inside the top-100 in the ATP rankings, Monteiro is hopeful of another deep run in Cordoba where he is playing for second time in his career.

Carballes Baena Routs Sousa

For Joao Sousa, confidence is at an all-time low. Despite just two rankings spots separating him and Carballes Baena, there were vast differences in many other aspects. One of those was the Spaniard’s superior record in their head-to-head. The other, was his decent record on this part of the continent.

Carballes Baena whose lone ATP tour title came in South America (Quito in 2018), was ruthless in extending Sousa’s winless streak to 12 matches. Incredibly, all those have now come in the first round of tournaments, stretching back to October 2019. Sousa also lost for the third time in the series, going down 6-3 6-1.

The 27-year-old Spanish baseliner, won almost every duel. He created a whopping 15 break point chances, and converting four. He won 74% first serve points and 100% on his second serve, highlighting the nature of this one-sided victory.

It is Carballes Baena’s second match win of the season, adding to his first round win at the Australian Open a fortnight ago. He is also on doubles duty in Cordoba, pairing with countryman and world no.47 Albert Ramos Vinolas.

Monteiro v Carballes Baena Prediction and Tip

This is tough match up for Carballes Baena despite his clay court prowess. In four previous meetings, he hasn’t looked remotely close to solve the Monteiro riddle. He is also 8-7 against left handed players in his career at tour level. That partly explains why he struggles with the pattern of play the likes of Monteiro can initiate. However, we expect this to be closely contested.

Tip: Over 21.5 games: 5/6 (bet365)
