Egor Gerasimov v Aljaz Bedene Head to Head

Gerasimov and Bedene will meet for the first time on Thursday.

Gerasimov Beats Resurgent Murray

Andy Murray’s return to tour-level tennis was short-lived as he was beaten in straight sets by Egor Gerasimov. Murray who finished runner-up at last weekend’s Biella Challenger, has now lost in his last four matches on the main tour.

A tight opening set needed 71 minutes and an enthralling tiebreak to decide it. Murray spurned a set point, but ultimately the Belarusian deserved it having established leads throughout the set, converting at fourth time of asking.

There wetre flashes of brilliance of the old Murray, but his grumbles at every missed opportunity or error were visible throughout. Gerasimov, as you might remember, won a single game in his last outing against the breakout star Aslan Karatsev, in what was one of the most devastating beatdowns in recent memory.

However, this was a marked improvement in both fitness and performance for the world no.83. He served better (landed 67% of first serves), broke Murray three times and won 28 receiving points. In the end, Murray’s week-long committment in Italy drained a lot of his energy, and he completely ran out of gas at the end of this match as he lost 7-6 6-1.

For Gerasimov, a second round meeting against Aljaz Bedene awaits.

Bedene Stuns Sinner

While Gerasimov was beating a former star, Aljaz Bedene was in turn stunning a future star. The Slovenian was at astronomical odds to win his first round match against the precociously talented Italian Jannik Sinner. But Bedene tends to find his range on an indoor hard court, and he did just that.

Bedene rallied from a set down to win 3-6 6-2 7-6.

The world no.60 lost the opening set thanks to some pure ball striking from Sinner’s racket. But he took the initiative thereafter. Instead of hugging the baseline, Bedene drew himself in, and took the ball on the rise early. He broke Sinner’s serve twice in the second set, with aggressive hitting and some clever net play.

Bedene’s own serve was also firing at the dotted spots. He landed 14 aces in the entire two hours and 39 minutes of high octane tennis and won 71% of first serve points. The 31-year-old gains revenge on Sinner, after losing to the 19-year-old at the Great Ocean Road Open earlier this month.

With this shocking win, Bedene betters last year’s result in Montpellier and also becomes the first player outside the top 10 to defeat Sinner on an indoor hard court in a year. With two finalist appearances on this surface, can Aljaz Bedene make a deep run in Montpellier this week?

Gerasimov v Bedene Prediction and Tip

The odds are almost even, which explains why both Gerasimov and Bedene are more at home on an indoor hard court. We expect this to go the distance.

Tip: There sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
