Austrian Number Two Novak Hoping to Move On

The number two Austrian player behind Dominic Thiem, Novak, like his opponent, has spent most of his career on the junior tours, but his world ranking has now improved to the extent that he is starting to get automatic invites to events such as this.

And he has fully justified that with his unexpected run to the quarter-finals.

He began with a match against Gilles Simon of France, a man ranked 31 places above him in the world, who also enjoyed home court advantage. Novak took the first set on a  tie-break and recovered from dropping the second for the gain of just one game, to clinch the win in the third.

That, though, was just a prelude to his victory over Dasun Lajovic of Serbia, the world 27, and the number three seed in Montpellier.

The first set was error-strewn from both men, each of whom dropped their serve twice. That meant a tie-break and Novak grabbed the advantage by converting his third set point.

It was the Austrian who was the first to drop his serve in the second set. But he immediately broke back and then broke Lajovic for a second time to seal one of the biggest wins of his career.

German Qualifier Gojowczyk Showing Spark

Qualifier Gojowczyk is used to life on the Challenger Tour. Not only is this a rare foray into the main draw of a senior ATP event, but to then reach the quarter-final is something for him to treasure.

He produced a major surprise in the first round by knocking out his compatriot and number eight seed, Jan-Lennard Struff, in straight sets.

And he again began the match as underdog against Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic, the world number 60, on Thursday.

The first set saw both players create break point opportunities, but neither could convert them and it eventually went to a tie-break. And there it was Gojowczyk who faltered, enabling Vesely to establish a lead.

Again, there was nothing to separate them in the second set. and that too went to a tie-break. The difference this time was that it was the German who secured the vital point against the serve to level the match.

However, Gojowczyk broke Vesely early in the third set, and he was able to serve out from there.

Novak v Gojowczyk Prediction and Tip

Neither man would have expected to get to the quarter-final so, for both of them, what happens from here is a bonus.

There is very little to choose  between them but, because  of his higher  ranking, Novak may have the light edge. It may need three sets to separate them though.

Tip: Novak to win: 9/10 (bet365)
