Cornet Searching for Form

Alize Cornet comes into the tournament with a 3-4 record this year.

A six-time winner on the WTA Tour, Cornet began the season in Abu Dhabi, winning her first round match against Greece’s Velentini Grammatikopoulou, before falling to Paula Badosa in the next round.

At the Gippsland Trophy, Cornet fought back from a set down to win her first round match against Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic, but once again was stopped in the next round, this time by the second seed Naomi Osaka.

Next up was the Australian Open, where she once again got through her first round test, beating Russia’s Valeria Savinykh in a close three-set contest, but failed to win two in a row, falling to Ann Li of the U.S. in the next round.

She featured in the Phillip Island Trophy next, where she was sent packing by Australia’s Kimberly Birrell in the first round.

The 31-year-old, ranked 58th in the world, who first won a title in Budapest in 2008, won her sixth in Gstaad in 2018.

Last year, she reached the fourth round at the U.S. Open and the quarterfinal in Auckland.

Burel Slowly Making an Impression

Facing Cornet in the first round will be another Frenchwoman, Clara Burel, who is coming off a solid week, which saw her enter the final of an ITF event. She will be playing seventh seed Daria Snigur of Ukraine in the final on Sunday.

The 19-year-old, who made a stunning run to the third round of the French Open on her main draw debut as a wildcard last year, began the 2021 season with three wins in a row at the Australian Open qualifiers.

She was beaten by Camila Giorgi in the first round of the Yarra River Classic and then made a first round exit from the Melbourne slam, losing to Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck, despite taking the first set.

Ranked 217th in the world, Burel, who was the junior world No. 1 in 2018, defeated Arantxa Rus and Kaja Juvan in the first two rounds at Roland Garros last year. Zhang Shui stopped her run in the third round.

On Sunday, she will be aiming to win her second ITF title.

Cornet v Burel Prediction and Tip

Burel will come into the contest in good form, but given Cornet’s experience, she should have this under control. Expect the senior pro to advance into the next round.

Tip: Cornet to win: 2/5 (bet365)
